The April season is always the year's biggest. Spring 2026 was something else. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Re:Zero, and Classroom of the Elite all hit season four at once, joined by the long-awaited Witch Hat Atelier and One Piece's Elbaf arc. Add JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run, Yomi no Tsugai, and Akane-banashi, and the season carried more than 80 shows. Japanese anime media called it hyakka ryōran, a hundred flowers in bloom, and fans argued endlessly about what to prioritize.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 (April 3)

Studio 8bit's fourth season was announced as five cours split across broadcasts, which is unusual even by industry standards: two consecutive cours first, then three more. The light novel finished at 23 volumes in November 2025, so the anime is entering its endgame. Season four covers the Demon Lord's Machinations arc, with Granbell and Mariabell Rosso standing against Rimuru. The franchise carries 56 million copies in print and 3 billion streams worldwide.

The film Ao no Namida, released February 2026, bridges seasons three and four. Eir Aoi performs the opening, "Esoragoto," and also performs the Classroom of the Elite season four opening, competing against herself in the same cour.

Re:Zero Season 4 (April 8)

White Fox has produced since season 1, with Masahiro Shinohara directing, adapting the Pleiades Watchtower arc (volumes 21 to 25), the longest in the series. Masahiro Yokotani handles series composition and Kenichiro Suehiro the music. Subaru's group heads for the sage Shaula in the Augria Sand Dunes to restore Rem's memories and lift Crusch's curse. New cast: Faylan Ai as Shaula and Tomokazu Sugita as the first Sword Saint, Reid Astrea. Author Tappei Nagatsuki supervises the series composition.

A world premiere screening ran at Lucca Comics & Games in Italy in November 2025, and overseas press called it the most anticipated title of spring 2026. White Fox was acquired by Alphapolis in July 2025, with no reported effect on production. Crunchyroll holds exclusive worldwide streaming rights.

Classroom of the Elite Season 4 (April 1)

The first of the big titles to air, it opened with a 90-minute special covering episodes one through four, a bold move. Lerche returned to produce, but Noriyuki Nōma took over as director and Maki Kōno on character design, which split the fanbase.

Season four adapts Year 2, Semester 1 (volumes Y2.1 to Y2.4), built around a White Room assassin hidden among the incoming first-years. Ayanokōji and Karuizawa navigate school life with their relationship now public. Previous seasons drew criticism for compressing the novels, and fans made clear they wanted this one handled properly.

Witch Hat Atelier (April 6)

A first adaptation of Kamome Shirahama's much-decorated manga. BUG FILMS produces (Zom 100, Summer Time Rendering), Ayumu Watanabe directs (Doraemon, Children of the Sea), Kōji Seko handles series composition, and Yuka Kitamura, known as an Elden Ring composer, scores.

The manga's premise is that magic is not innate talent but a craft you can learn. It has passed 7.5 million copies worldwide and won both a Harvey Award and an Eisner. Originally slated for 2025, it was pushed to 2026 for quality. The PV drew praise for film-grade visuals, and overseas viewers repeatedly compared it to Frieren.

The opening is "Kaze no Anthem" by Eve feat. suis of Yorushika. BUG FILMS had scheduling trouble on its debut, Zom 100, which left some quiet concern about production.

One Piece: Elbaf Arc (April 5)

For One Piece, Elbaf is not just a new arc. It ends 26 years of weekly broadcasting and moves to a seasonal model of up to 26 episodes a year. It also adopts a one chapter to one episode ratio, ending the padding that has frustrated viewers for years.

Elbaf has been anticipated since the Little Garden arc around 2001, when the giants first spoke of their homeland: over 20 years of waiting. The Straw Hats land with Lilith, Kuma, and Bonney. Meeting Prince Loki, Robin reuniting with Jaguar D. Saul, flashbacks to the God Valley Incident. Eiichiro Oda's message: "Ahead is a festival!! Expect a lot!!!"

And That's Not Even All

Also on the slate: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run (Netflix exclusive from March 19, produced by David Production), Yomi no Tsugai (Hiromu Arakawa and BONES, April 4), Dorohedoro Season 2 (MAPPA, six years on), Dr. STONE SCIENCE FUTURE cour 3 (final chapter), My Hero Academia More (epilogue), Akane-banashi (Jump's rakugo manga), Nihon Sangoku, and NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE.

The Haken Race: How It Actually Ended

Haken is the title given to the season's most talked-about, most popular anime, roughly what English speakers call Anime of the Season. Pre-season predictions were scattered. As the season ran, a clear shape emerged.

Slime season 4 held the top on viewership. It won d Anime Store's popularity poll and topped a Mynavi News survey of 300 members conducted on May 28, 2026. Decades of name recognition and a rock-solid fanbase showed up in the numbers. Re:Zero season 4 took second and was essentially level with Slime on social volume and intensity. "Every episode's cliffhanger is too strong." "SNS erupts every week over developments nobody saw coming." For theory-crafting, nothing else came close.

The interesting part starts here. The satisfaction rankings were topped by Yomi no Tsugai, which nobody had flagged before broadcast. Episode one overturned the story's premise and the show shot up. "Arakawa's mix of orthodox action and mystery, paced perfectly," ran the consensus, and it landed third on the d Anime Store poll. Fellow dark horse Nihon Sangoku drew high marks on the sheer strength of its writing.

Akane-banashi cleared the bar everyone worried about, the rakugo performance scenes, and climbed on word of mouth. And Witch Hat Atelier, sitting around sixth on viewership, was called an art object for its visuals and took the highest heat score of the season. "Backgrounds and color without a single weak point; the art direction is a head above everything." A show that refused to compete on spectacle made its case on craft.

When Hype Goes Wrong: Cautionary Tales

Before the season, fans kept reaching for the same failures.

Chainsaw Man (Fall 2022) is the instructive one. MAPPA funded it alone, no production committee, and it was called guaranteed haken before it aired. But director Ryu Nakayama's cinematic, restrained approach never meshed with the manga's chaotic energy, and Blu-ray sales came to 1,735 copies. The number became shorthand for hype collapse, and "1735" turned into a meme. The same cour, BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, far quieter going in, simply took the crown.

The Promised Neverland season 2 (Winter 2021) cut the Goldy Pond arc, the part fans loved most, entirely, and resolved years of story via a final-episode slideshow. It destroyed the franchise's reputation overnight. Ranker has it first on most disappointing anime of all time.

One-Punch Man hurts too. Madhouse's first season set a bar, then J.C.Staff took over and quality visibly dropped. Season three, in fall 2025, sank to 4.74/10 on MyAnimeList.

The Streaming War Behind the Anime War

The headache was distribution. Crunchyroll held the biggest portfolio: Re:Zero, Slime, One Piece, Classroom of the Elite, Witch Hat, Yomi no Tsugai, Dr. STONE. But Netflix took JoJo SBR exclusively, Disney+ took Blue Lock season 3, and HIDIVE secured Oshi no Ko season 3. Watching everything meant paying several times over. That was its own front in the war.

The Law of the Dark Horse

Spring 2026 may have been the most competitive season since spring 2013, when Attack on Titan rewrote what anime could be. The difference is that 2013 had one towering show, while 2026 had a dozen heavyweights splitting the audience.

And the result proved the genre's oldest rule again. The top of the numbers belonged to an established giant, but the show people talked about as the season's discovery was Yomi no Tsugai, which nobody was watching for, and Witch Hat Atelier, which threw away spectacle entirely. The most anticipated does not necessarily win. Something nobody was looking at surfaces instead. And the more stacked the season, the likelier that becomes.
