302nm UV Laser for Quantum Computers: Japan's Oxide Ships the Heart of Neutral-Atom Machines

Oxide Corporation, an optical crystal maker in Hokuto, Yamanashi, began selling Frequad-K, a 302nm UV laser source for quantum computers, on March 9, 2026. The wavelength is what excites ytterbium atoms into the Rydberg states neutral-atom machines need, and the first unit went to a domestic customer. We look at why 95% world share in semiconductor wafer inspection crystals transfers to quantum, and at the 436nm quantum communications laser Oxide shipped to LQUOM in July.

Silicon Qubit Breakthrough: Hitachi Achieves 99.1% Gate Fidelity, Plans Cloud Access by 2027

Hitachi and the Institute of Science Tokyo extended coherence time roughly 280-fold and demonstrated 99.1% gate fidelity on natural silicon, the material standard semiconductor fabs already use, with no isotope purification. The result comes from a Concatenated Continuous Drive scheme combining continuous microwave irradiation with phase modulation. Unlike the superconducting route taken by IBM and Google, it builds on existing chipmaking, with cloud access targeted for fiscal 2027.
