Fifteen years after forming, BABYMETAL, Japan's global metal dance unit, will curate the "SONIC METAL STAGE" at Summer Sonic 2026, a festival marking its own 25th year. After cracking the Billboard 200 Top 10, Japan-born metal is reshaping the world's festival scene.
BABYMETAL Confirmed for Summer Sonic 2026
On February 19, 2026, BABYMETAL announced they will perform at Summer Sonic 2026 at both the Tokyo venue (ZOZO Marine Stadium & Makuhari Messe) and the Osaka venue (Expo '70 Commemorative Park). But this is no ordinary festival booking; BABYMETAL will curate the Sonic Stage for one day at each location, transforming it into the "SONIC METAL STAGE – Curated by BABYMETAL."
Summer Sonic is one of Japan's largest urban rock festivals, launched in 2000 and drawing a cumulative audience of approximately 4.7 million over its 24-year history. The 2026 edition celebrates the festival's 25th anniversary with an ambitious three-day format running August 14–16 in both Tokyo and Osaka simultaneously, targeting a record-breaking attendance of 330,000. Headliners include The Strokes, Jamiroquai, and L'Arc-en-Ciel, alongside major acts like Sakanaction, JENNIE of BLACKPINK, and BUMP OF CHICKEN (Tokyo only).
Within this stacked lineup, BABYMETAL's role as curator stands out. Choosing who plays the stage, and in what order, makes them directors of the whole thing rather than one more name on the bill. That level of creative authority is rarely handed to artists at a festival this size.
Two Milestones Converge: 15 Years of BABYMETAL × 25 Years of Summer Sonic
BABYMETAL formed in 2010 as a three-member "metal dance unit," a concept that sounds impossible on paper but works brilliantly in practice. The group features SU-METAL (vocals & dance), MOAMETAL (scream & dance), and MOMOMETAL (scream & dance), fusing heavy metal with J-pop in a genre they call "kawaii metal" (literally "cute metal"). The concept came from producer KOBAMETAL, who wanted to graft the energy of Japan's idol-pop industry onto the raw force of metal. Since their first world tour in 2014, they've become regulars at major festivals across Europe, North America, and Asia.
BABYMETAL and Summer Sonic share a long history. The group has performed at the festival multiple times, and at Summer Sonic 2025, they packed the Mountain Stage at Makuhari Messe, generating massive mosh pits that united fans regardless of nationality or age. The festival's official statement described their relationship as one where "neither can be told without the other," less a booking arrangement and more a shared journey.
The Records "METAL FORTH" Rewrote
Their latest album, "METAL FORTH," released in August 2025, debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200, the first Top 10 entry by an all-Japanese group. It beat their own previous best, No. 13 with "METAL GALAXY" in 2019, and also landed in the Top 10 in Germany and the Top 20 in the UK.
"METAL FORTH" is packed with genre-defying collaborations: Poppy, Electric Callboy, Slaughter to Prevail, Bloodywood, Polyphia, Spiritbox, and guitar legend Tom Morello all feature on the album's ten tracks. The guest list says something about where BABYMETAL sits now: less a Japanese band with overseas fans than a connecting point between scenes.
Their world tour has been equally record-breaking. In May 2025, they sold out London's O2 Arena (capacity: 20,000), the first Japanese group to headline a solo show there. In November they did the same at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. Their January 2026 homecoming at Saitama Super Arena, "LEGEND – METAL FORTH," paired a full run-through of the new album with 15th-anniversary material.
What to Expect from the SONIC METAL STAGE
When the booking was announced, the stage's lineup had not been revealed, and fan speculation ran accordingly.
BABYMETAL's extensive network, built through collaborations, tours, and festival appearances, gives them an impressive roster to draw from. Potential acts could range from "METAL FORTH" collaborators like Electric Callboy, Spiritbox, and Bloodywood, to tour partners like Black Veil Brides and Jinjer, and possibly even METALVERSE, a new-generation project produced under BABYMETAL's umbrella.
Most predicted a bill weighted toward emerging metal acts, with perhaps one or two bigger names from the "METAL FORTH" era, on the logic that the Sonic Stage's capacity favors newer artists over arena headliners.
Singing in Japanese, Routing by Data
BABYMETAL's music travels without being translated. Watch footage from an overseas show and the crowd is singing along in Japanese, not a localized version. Even on the collaboration tracks, BABYMETAL sings in Japanese while the guest artist sings in their own language.
Producer KOBAMETAL has described his approach as captaining a ship: "The band is a vessel, and I'm its captain. I look at the map and guide where we sail." The routing behind that is less romantic: the team reads Spotify, YouTube, and Instagram data to decide which cities to play, following where the fanbase is actually growing.
In 2025, BABYMETAL established BABYMETAL WORLD LLC in the United States and signed a partnership with Capitol Records, accelerating their global expansion. Curating Summer Sonic's metal stage extends that strategy from playing to programming, introducing audiences to the artists they think represent where metal goes next.
At the time of the announcement, three-day tickets were available through the official advance sale, with day-specific lineups still to come.
Update: On May 15, 2026, Summer Sonic published its stage assignments, confirming the dates and the bill for the SONIC "METAL" STAGE – Curated by BABYMETAL. Osaka takes Friday, August 14; Tokyo takes Sunday, August 16. Both days feature the same seven acts: BABYMETAL, mgk (Machine Gun Kelly), Pendulum, Ave Mujica, The Warning, South Arcade, and METALVERSE. METALVERSE, named above as a possibility, did make the cut, but the lineup skews wider across genre and nationality than the "emerging acts" prediction suggested. Final lineups and set times followed in July.
Does your country have artists who break genre boundaries and challenge the global stage like BABYMETAL? Do music festivals in your country feature "curated stages" where artists get to shape the lineup? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
