🎵 Coachella ✅ Lollapalooza ✅ And now, Canada. YOASOBI, the Japanese duo behind global hits like "Idol" and "Into The Night," will be the first J-Pop artist ever to perform at OSHEAGA, one of North America's biggest music festivals. Here's why it matters for J-Pop's footprint on the world stage.
YOASOBI Makes History at OSHEAGA: First J-Pop Artist Ever
On February 25, 2026, Japanese music duo YOASOBI announced they will perform at OSHEAGA Music and Arts Festival in Montreal, Canada. The three-day festival runs from July 31 to August 2, with YOASOBI taking the stage on opening day, July 31.
This is a double milestone: the first time a J-Pop artist has ever appeared on the OSHEAGA lineup, and YOASOBI's very first live performance in Canada.
What Is OSHEAGA?
Now in its 19th year, OSHEAGA is one of Canada's largest music festivals. Held at Parc Jean-Drapeau, an island venue on the St. Lawrence River in Montreal, Quebec, it has previously hosted Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Coldplay and Lana Del Rey.
The 2026 edition runs 87 acts across three days. Twenty One Pilots headline Friday, July 31, returning for the first time since 2015; Tate McRae closes Saturday, August 1; Lorde wraps Sunday, August 2, her third OSHEAGA appearance after 2014 and 2017. The bill also includes The xx, Turnstile, Empire of the Sun, Geese, Clipse, Kehlani, Gunna, Major Lazer, Franz Ferdinand, Little Simz, Wolf Alice and Wet Leg, plus 26 Canadian artists, 14 of them from Quebec. YOASOBI perform on the Friday alongside Twenty One Pilots, The xx and The Neighbourhood.
For Calgary-born Tate McRae, the Saturday slot is her only Canadian festival date of 2026. Sharing a weekend with names at that level says something about where YOASOBI now sit internationally.
YOASOBI's Path to OSHEAGA: A Festival-by-Festival Journey
YOASOBI's OSHEAGA booking didn't come out of nowhere. The duo, composer Ayase and vocalist ikura, has built its North American presence steadily over three years.
Their first US performance came at Head in the Clouds Festival in Pasadena, California, in August 2023. By April 2024 they had made the leap to Coachella, playing three sets including a dedicated solo stage. That August they played Lollapalooza in Chicago on the 15,000-capacity BACARDI Stage, where fans sang along to Japanese lyrics in a moment that went viral.
Solo shows followed. Los Angeles and San Francisco sold out in 30 minutes. New York's Radio City Music Hall and Boston's MGM Music Hall at Fenway followed, both sold out.
In 2025 they extended to Europe with Primavera Sound in Barcelona and a one-off London date, and opened for Billie Eilish's "Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour" at the Saitama shows in Japan. Across Asia the duo has completed multiple tours covering South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.
The Songs That Crossed Borders
YOASOBI's international breakout is inseparable from the anime boom.
"Idol" (アイドル), the opening theme for the anime Oshi no Ko, topped Billboard JAPAN's Hot 100 for 21 consecutive weeks in 2023. It also reached No. 1 on Billboard's Global Excl. U.S. chart, Apple Music's Top 100: Global and YouTube's TOP 100 songs Global, a combination no Japanese-language song had managed before.
"Yuusha" (勇者, "The Brave"), the opening theme for the fantasy anime Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, found global audiences on the strength of its melody and narrative. "Kaibutsu" (Monster) was named one of TIME magazine's 10 Best Songs of 2021.
Their debut single "Yoru ni Kakeru" (Into The Night, literally "Racing Into the Night") has accumulated over 900 million streams and made them the most internationally streamed Japanese artist on Spotify in 2021.
What sets YOASOBI apart is the creative premise: every song is based on a short story or novel. Ayase composes from the narrative and ikura voices the characters. That novel-to-music approach gives the work a storytelling depth that survives translation, or the absence of it.

J-Pop's North American Festival Circuit Is Growing
YOASOBI performing at OSHEAGA is more than a one-off booking. With Coachella (California), Lollapalooza (Chicago), and now OSHEAGA (Montreal), the duo is steadily checking off North America's most influential festival stages.
They're not alone. Ado has built a following on anonymous vocal performances, Fujii Kaze blends Japanese soul with a global sensibility, Number_i is pushing into the American market, and XG has pioneered a Japan-based global pop model. Where K-Pop's expansion ran through a comparatively centralized industry, J-Pop's has been a set of individual routes.
For YOASOBI specifically, the winning formula appears to be the combination of anime-driven global discovery, a unique narrative-based creative process, and live performances that consistently turn curious listeners into devoted fans, even when every word is in Japanese.
When YOASOBI take the stage on that island in Montreal, it will be another chapter in a story J-Pop is still writing.
Update (July 31, 2026): OSHEAGA 2026 opened on schedule today, July 31, at Parc Jean-Drapeau. YOASOBI are on the opening-day bill, with Twenty One Pilots headlining the night. The festival runs through August 2.
How well-known is Japanese music in your country? When an artist from your homeland performs at a major international festival, how does it make you feel? We'd love to hear your perspective.
