High-speed cameras trade detail for duration. A University of Tokyo team packs frames tightly at first and spreads them out later, linking roughly 5 orders of magnitude in time with 11 frames in a single shot.
On August 7, 2026, Japan's mechanical engineers added six objects to their Mechanical Engineering Heritage list, now 138 long: a camera that hit 45,000 frames a second in the 1920s, and a micrometer kept on a home altar.
Tohoku University, JAMSTEC and Fuji Electric filmed droplets on a geothermal turbine blade spinning at 430 m/s, and what held on stationary walls did not hold here. Japan itself runs just 607 MW of geothermal.
