What Is D.U.N.K.? Breaking Down Japan's Cross-Agency Music Project

D.U.N.K. stands for "Dance Universe Never Killed," and it's a large-scale music project co-produced by rapper-entrepreneur SKY-HI and Nippon Television (NTV), one of Japan's major broadcast networks.

In the Japanese entertainment industry, artists from different talent agencies collaborating on the same stage has historically been rare. Agencies tend to operate as closed ecosystems, and public crossover events between rival companies are the exception rather than the rule. D.U.N.K. was created specifically to dismantle these barriers, bringing together artists from BMSG, LDH, Stardust, and other major agencies under one roof.

The project operates on three pillars. First, a weekly television show on NTV features participating artists getting to know each other through variety-show-style content and interviews. Second, the live showcase brings everyone together for collaborative performances. Third, YouTube content, including full performances and behind-the-scenes footage, extends the experience to international fans.

The event has grown steadily since its 2023 launch. Chapter 1 took place at Ariake and Makuhari Messe. Chapter 2 expanded to the massive Kyocera Dome in Osaka. Chapter 3 moved to K-Arena Yokohama in January 2025, where SB19 member KEN became the first Filipino performer at the event, appearing as a solo rap collaboration artist under his stage name FELIP alongside SKY-HI. Chapter 4 marks the first-ever three consecutive day format, the largest edition yet.

SB19 and the Filipino Contingent Take Center Stage

The headline addition is the three Filipino acts, making this the strongest Southeast Asian representation in D.U.N.K. history.

SB19 is a five-member boy group widely called the "Kings of P-Pop." Trained in the Korean idol system but deeply rooted in Filipino identity, they've built a global fanbase that transcends Southeast Asia. They were nominated for Billboard Music Awards' Top Social Artist and are credited with putting "P-Pop", a distinctly Filipino take on pop music, on the world map. After KEN's solo appearance last year, the full group now joins DAY 3's headline roster alongside BE:FIRST, Da-iCE, and .ENDRECHERI.

BGYO, the "Aces of P-Pop," is a five-member group following in SB19's footsteps. They posted on social media immediately after the announcement, expressing excitement about performing at K-Arena Yokohama on March 14.

Cup of Joe brings a different flavor as an indie band from the Philippines. Their vocalist Gian Bernardino celebrated on X with infectious enthusiasm: "we're going to japaaaan!!! opm representtt" (OPM standing for Original Pilipino Music.

From Thailand, 12-member boy group BUS because of you i shine rounds out the Southeast Asian delegation on DAY 2.

BMSG Trainees Step Into the Spotlight

DAY 3's opening act slot goes to BMSG TRAINEE, the development roster of SKY-HI's management company BMSG (Be My Self Group).

BMSG's trainee system is Japan's adaptation of the "trainee" concept popularized by Korean entertainment companies. Artists-in-development receive intensive training while gaining real-world performance experience before their official debut. This pipeline has already produced BE:FIRST, MAZZEL, and the newest group STARGLOW, who debuted in January 2026.

The trainees are currently featured in their own TV show, "Torehan!" (short for "Trainee Hunting"), now in its third season. The D.U.N.K. stage at the 20,000-capacity K-Arena Yokohama represents a major step up, performing on the same bill as SB19 and BE:FIRST is the kind of trial-by-fire that can accelerate an artist's development dramatically.

BMSG has been on an impressive growth trajectory. BE:FIRST completed a world tour across 12 cities in America, Asia, and Europe in 2025. STARGLOW's debut single hit No. 7 on the Billboard JAPAN Hot 100. The company now employs roughly 100 staff and its artists regularly chart in Japan's top 10. SKY-HI himself noted after BMSG FES'25, which drew 80,000 fans to Odaiba, that the overseas challenge "isn't easy, but we have more than enough talented people to make it happen."

SKY-HI's Vision: Music Without Borders

SKY-HI (born Mitsuhiro Hidaka) is a rare figure in Japanese entertainment, simultaneously an active rapper/producer and the CEO of a talent management company. He founded BMSG in 2020 under the slogan "To not kill talent" ("Sainou wo korosanai tameni"), a pointed critique of the rigid hierarchies and creative limitations he saw in the traditional Japanese idol system.

D.U.N.K. is the external-facing expression of that philosophy. While BMSG FES serves as the company's internal showcase, D.U.N.K. breaks the agency boundaries entirely and, with Chapter 4, expands that openness across national borders.

The progression is deliberate. Chapter 1 introduced cross-agency collaboration within Japan. Chapter 2 scaled up the ambition. Chapter 3 added the first international artist. Chapter 4 now features acts from the Philippines, Thailand, and Korea alongside a deep roster of Japanese performers spanning generations, from DA PUMP, who've led Japan's dance music scene since the 1990s, to STARGLOW, who debuted just weeks ago.

What makes D.U.N.K. distinct from a standard international music festival is its storytelling architecture. The TV show builds relationships before the live event. The showcase creates once-in-a-lifetime collaborative performances. YouTube distributes those moments globally. It's designed to fuse fanbases, not just share a stage.

What This Means for Asian Dance & Vocal Culture

K-Pop has established itself as a global cultural force, but it doesn't represent the full diversity of Asian pop music. The Philippines has P-Pop. Thailand has its own thriving boy group scene. Japan has a decades-long tradition of dance & vocal groups that predates the Korean Wave.

D.U.N.K. isn't positioning itself as an alternative to K-Pop; it's creating a platform where multiple Asian pop traditions can coexist and cross-pollinate. When SB19 (Filipino identity, Korean-style training) shares a stage with DA PUMP (Japanese dance pop veterans) and STARGLOW (BMSG's newest creation), the result is something genuinely new.

In Japan, there's considerable excitement about this growing Asian music exchange, along with some practical concerns about ticket prices and availability. What about where you live: are there events where artists from different countries collaborate on the same stage? What does the dance & vocal scene look like in your country? We'd love to hear your perspective.
