⚽ Somewhere in Hiroshima, a handful of office workers are awake past 3 a.m., glued to the World Cup, waiting for one specific thing. They aren't watching the players. They're watching the referee's hand, listening for a whistle they built. The most widely used whistle at the World Cup doesn't come from a famous sportswear giant. It comes from a Japanese rubber company most fans have never heard of, and the story of how it got there is better than most of the matches.
The 3 a.m. group chat
Every four years, when the World Cup kicks off, the company Line chat at Molten lights up. The games air in the middle of the night in Japan because of the time difference, but employees stay up anyway, eyes on their TVs.
"Look, that one's ours!"
"Another of ours this match too!"
A staffer from Molten's PR team, Nakamori Shintaro, has described the ritual to reporters. There's no rule about which whistle a World Cup referee must use, so officials pick whatever they trust. That uncertainty is exactly what makes the watching fun. Every tournament, Molten employees scan the broadcasts almost like a game show, trying to spot a referee reaching for the Valkeen, the company's flagship soccer whistle.
Molten, based in Hiroshima, is best known abroad as a ball maker. Its basketballs are the official ball of FIBA international competitions, and it has supplied volleyballs, handballs, and soccer balls to top leagues for decades. Whistles were a quieter sideline. Then, over a few years, that sideline ended up in the hands of the people refereeing the biggest games on earth.
Why one whistle couldn't do every job
In 2000, Molten put out a referee whistle called the Dolphin Pro. It had a sharp, clean tone, it sold steadily for years, and it turned up at soccer and basketball games alike. By most measures it was a success.
The company wasn't satisfied. Around 2009, people inside Molten started asking awkward questions. Why should the same whistle work for soccer and basketball, when the two sports look nothing alike on the court? Why would a referee at a high school match and a referee at a World Cup final reach for the identical tool? The playing areas are different sizes. Referees hold their whistles differently. A whistle, the argument went, should be designed for the exact job it does.
So Molten set out to build something that didn't really exist yet: a whistle made specifically for soccer.
The sound that had to beat 100,000 voices
The hard part wasn't the plastic. It was the sound.
The 2010 World Cup final in South Africa was going to be played in a stadium holding roughly 100,000 people. The whistle had to cut through all of them at full roar. And it couldn't just be loud. A referee actually needs two different sounds. One is a warning, a sharp burst of short blasts that tells a player to stop something dangerous right now. The other is a signal, a stronger but calmer note that marks the start or end of play.
The warning was the engineering problem. "Sharp," in Nakamori's telling, means the sound reaches its peak volume almost instantly. In a contact sport, a delay of even a few tenths of a second before players register the whistle can change what happens next on the pitch. The referee has to fill an entire stadium with sound in a blink.
There was a second problem nobody could have scripted. South Africa 2010 was the tournament of the vuvuzela, the plastic horn whose flat, droning buzz blanketed every stadium and, famously, drowned out almost everything else. Players struggled to hear each other. The whistle still had to get through.
A hundred prototypes and a falcon's name
Molten's answer to the sound problem was to stop relying on one note. The Valkeen produces two tones at once, tuned to 3.67 and 4.15 kilohertz. Played together, the slightly different pitches interfere and create a pulsing, wavering sound, the kind of texture the human ear is unusually good at picking out of background noise. Fins on the body shape the airflow so the tone rises fast and carries.
Sound was only half of it. The team studied how referees actually move. Normally a soccer official lets the whistle dangle from a wrist strap and has to fumble it up into position before each call, a small delay that adds up to real stress over ninety minutes. Molten's fix was the "flip grip," a piece that lets a referee flick the whistle into place between the fingers in an instant. It took more than a hundred prototypes to land the final design.
Even the name was deliberate. The whistle's lean shape was modeled on the peregrine falcon, a hunting bird that dives on its prey, called valk in Dutch. The English word keen evokes the cutting sound. Valk plus keen: Valkeen.
One of the referees who gave feedback during development was Nishimura Yuichi, a Japanese official. At the 2010 World Cup he refereed four matches, praised the whistle, and used it at the final itself, where he served as fourth official. The Valkeen cut clean through the vuvuzelas, and referees around the world took notice. By the 2018 World Cup in Russia, it was used in more than 30 of the 64 games. Reports from this year's tournament describe it as the de facto standard at the elite level, still chosen by many of the referees working the 2026 World Cup, alongside rival pealess whistles from Britain and Canada.
One whistle became four
Success bred specialization. Having built a whistle for soccer, Molten started building them for other sports, each tuned to its own problem.
The Blazza, a basketball whistle, came out in 2011. Basketball referees run alongside the play with the whistle clamped in their mouths, so Molten shifted the whistle's center of balance toward the mouthpiece to cut down on wear. After noticing that mouthpieces tended to crack from referees biting down hard, the company built a titanium mouthpiece wrapped in soft plastic and fused it to the harder body, soft enough to bite, tough enough not to break.
The Deevo, for volleyball, arrived in 2017 with fins on both sides so the sound carries evenly to a referee's left and right. The Vorca, for handball, adapts the flip grip for officials who constantly switch the whistle between hands. Same idea every time: figure out exactly what one sport demands, then build for that and nothing else.
The company behind the company
Here's the part that surprises people. The whistle so many World Cup referees reach for is a small corner of what Molten does.
Founded in Hiroshima in 1958 as a rubber manufacturer, the company now runs four businesses that look unrelated until you see the thread: sports balls and whistles, automotive rubber parts, a medical line built around air mattresses that prevent bedsores in bedridden patients, and a marine division making floating piers and rubber bearings for bridges. What connects them is two core technologies the company has reused for half a century: a "hollow body" technique for controlling air and pressure inside a sealed object, and polymer chemistry, the science of working rubber and resin. The same know-how that makes a basketball bounce true lets a mattress redistribute a patient's weight. Annual sales run to about 69.9 billion yen (roughly 430 million US dollars), with around 3,100 employees worldwide.
Lately Molten has aimed that engineering at problems outside sport. Its My Football Kit is a soccer ball children assemble themselves from 54 snap-together parts made of recycled resin, designed less as a product than as an educational tool for kids in places where a real ball is hard to come by.
So the next time a World Cup referee raises a hand and the stadium goes quiet for that sharp, wavering note, listen for a second. You may be hearing a small obsession from Hiroshima, the result of a company that refused to accept that a whistle is just a whistle.
