⚽ Argentina are the strongest team left in the World Cup. How strong, exactly? In the very Japanese conversion below, Argentina come out as Golden Frieza, Elon Musk, the Pirate King Gol D. Roger, and Arceus, the literal god of Pokemon, all at once. Their Round of 32 opponents, Cape Verde, come out as a farmer with a power level of 5.
This is roughly how a corner of Japanese football-and-anime social media explains the knockout bracket to friends who do not follow soccer. Stop talking about formations. Start talking about power levels.
The rules of a very silly game
Every national team carries a FIFA world ranking. We use the ranking from just before the tournament kicked off, so Argentina sit at No. 1, Spain No. 2, Brazil No. 6, Japan No. 18, and so on down the list. Then we take that number and pull whoever sits at the exact same position in four other famous rankings: the Forbes list of the world's richest people, official Dragon Ball power levels, One Piece bounties, and Pokemon base stat totals.
A No. 5 team becomes the world's fifth-richest person and the pirate with the fifth-highest bounty. The better your football ranking, the scarier your alter ego. The worse it is, the more embarrassing.
One honesty note, because this is a joke and nothing more: Dragon Ball stopped printing real numbers after the Frieza saga, so the top of that column leans on fan estimates. Plenty of Pokemon share the same stat total, so those are picks, not exact placements. And we made judgment calls on ties and on which "form" of a character to use. Do not take any of it to court.

The matchups that broke us
Argentina vs Cape Verde is less a game than an execution. Golden Frieza, the richest man alive, the Pirate King, and a literal god, against a farmer rated 5. The scouter explodes before kickoff.
USA vs Bosnia might be crueler. The Americans land on Nail at 42,000. Bosnia, ranked around 74th, fall off the bottom of every list at once: a Sea Turtle with a power level of 0.001, and no bounty at all, because nobody could be bothered to issue one.
Brazil vs Japan, the genuine headline tie, lands eerily well. Brazil become Super Saiyan Goku at 150 million. Japan become Goku's fourfold Kaioken at 32,000, a number that would dominate the early days of the series and then get instantly outclassed the moment Frieza turns up. In the Pokemon column Japan stay a Legendary, so the country keeps its pride.
Netherlands vs Morocco is the petty one. Buggy versus Mihawk, two members of the same pirate outfit, Cross Guild, forced to knock each other out in the first round. And the supposed underdog, Morocco, actually outranks the Dutch on every line but the Pokemon tie.
Belgium vs Senegal comes out as Luffy versus Marco the Phoenix, and Portugal vs Croatia as Shanks versus the brash newcomer Eustass Kid, which fits a Cristiano Ronaldo side a little too neatly.
The twist hiding in the numbers
There is one last joke buried in the Dragon Ball source. Once you reach the gods, the numbers shrink instead of growing. Beerus, the God of Destruction, reads as 10. His attendant Whis reads as 15. A tiny, clean number is the mark of a higher plane. Which means that, on paper, Whis at 15 outranks Golden Frieza at 100 quintillion. Even the tournament favourite has something far bigger sitting above it.
So if your country were somewhere in this bracket, which would it be: a god, an emperor, a beloved bald monk who keeps dying, or the sea turtle?
