🎮 A 1999 arcade game is becoming a live-action comedy. A hedgehog born in 1991 is getting a cartoon for preschoolers. The third title has not even shipped. When Netflix and SEGA announced their adaptation partnership on September 15, 2026, the three games they picked shared almost nothing beyond the SEGA logo.

The yellow cab went out ahead

SEGA and Netflix said on September 15, 2026 Japan time, September 14 in the United States, that they will adapt multiple titles from SEGA's catalogue together. The opening project is a live-action Crazy Taxi movie, written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand and produced by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara. Moritz and Ascher made the Sonic the Hedgehog films, and Nakahara, head producer for film and TV at SEGA, is attached to the new Sonic series as well.

Crazy Taxi turned up in arcades in 1999. You play a reckless cabbie who has to get passengers across town before the clock runs out, launching off ramps, threading between traffic, tearing through the city for tips. Half of that feeling was the driving. The other half was the music.

The songs came from bands like The Offspring and Bad Religion, and later ports shipped without those licensed tracks. Then on December 6, 2024 Pacific time, SEGA pulled the Xbox 360 and Steam versions from sale. The movie sets off from a game you can no longer buy on PC or Xbox.

Sonic's second Netflix show, and a fourth film in cinemas

The Netflix series casts Sonic and the rest of the gang as heroes for what the companies call an upper pre-school audience: quick, comedic, and built so that small kids want to be part of the crew.

This is not Netflix's first pass at Sonic. Sonic Prime, co-produced with SEGA, began streaming worldwide on December 15, 2022, aimed at kids, families and long-time fans all together, and its three seasons are still on the service. The new show pushes the target age down from there.

The live-action films, meanwhile, keep rolling. SEGA announced in January 2025 that its three Sonic films had passed $1 billion in combined worldwide box office, with a fourth scheduled for theaters on March 19, 2027.

The third one is a game nobody has finished

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is an original title from RGG Studio, the team behind the Like a Dragon series. It follows a penniless outsider in early 20th-century Japan who claws his way up to feared yakuza and then to entertainment tycoon. Netflix is developing it as a live-action crime story.

The game is not out. As of September 2026, the release date SEGA has announced is January 15, 2027. Its lead, Makoto Daito, is played by Yu Shirota, and the story stretches across 50 years, from 1915 to 1965.

Greenlighting a film for a game whose ending nobody has reached yet is an unusual order of operations. It reads like a deliberate pairing, with game and film pulling attention toward each other, though neither company has described it that way.

Different decades, different conditions

A preschool cartoon, a live-action comedy, a live-action crime picture. Netflix notes in the announcement that the titles come from separate periods of SEGA's history. SEGA president and COO Shuji Utsumi opened his comment by praising Netflix for taking on stories "across every kind of format".

Crazy Taxi is 27 years old and off sale on PC and Xbox. Sonic is 35 years old and already anchors a film franchise that has crossed $1 billion. No one has played STRANGER THAN HEAVEN through to the end. They differ by more than release year, and SEGA and Netflix have not pushed them into one mould.

More is undecided than decided

No release windows. No streaming dates. No cast. No director has been attached to any of the three, Crazy Taxi included. As of September 2026, that is where it stands.

SEGA plans to put out Crazy Taxi: World Tour, a full new entry in the series, in 2027. How the film and that game relate has not been explained.
