A singer who conquered the world without ever showing her face is now standing at the pinnacle of Japan's biggest summer festival. Ado has been announced as a headliner for SUMMER SONIC 2026, and for the first time in 25 years, two Japanese acts will top the bill. Behind that is a story of an unexpected incident and a last-minute "savior."
SUMMER SONIC's 25th Anniversary Gets Its Final Headliner: Ado
SUMMER SONIC 2026, running August 14–16 across two venues, ZOZO Marine Stadium and Makuhari Messe in Chiba for the Tokyo dates and Expo '70 Commemorative Park in Osaka, has revealed its third and final headliner: Ado.
The 23-year-old singer will headline the Tokyo show on Day 2 (Saturday, August 15) and the Osaka show on Day 3 (Sunday, August 16), joining The Strokes (Tokyo Day 1 / Osaka Day 2) and L'Arc-en-Ciel (Tokyo Day 3 / Osaka Day 1). With this announcement, all three headliner slots are now filled.
What makes this particularly historic is that two of the three headliners, Ado and legendary rock band L'Arc-en-Ciel, are Japanese. In SUMMER SONIC's 25-year history, this is an unprecedented first.
Behind the Scenes: From a "Rapper Starting with A" to "Savior Ado"
CREATIVEMAN Productions CEO Naoki Shimizu, the festival's organizer, went unusually public about the turbulent path to this announcement.
Originally, the third headliner slot was reserved for a rapper whose name starts with the letter "A." Negotiations were progressing, with the reveal planned for March 13 as part of a day-by-day lineup announcement. However, everything was thrown into chaos after a shooting incident near Rihanna's residence on March 8. The deal collapsed entirely, and organizers were told that restarting negotiations would require an enormous amount of time and effort, ultimately forcing them to abandon the plan.
Enter Ado, whom Shimizu described as a "savior" who stepped in to fill the void. "We are deeply grateful to Ado for accepting, and we look forward to a jaw-dropping, overwhelming stage performance for the SUMMER SONIC audience," he said.
Ado's Global Credentials
Ado's rise has been nothing short of meteoric. Since her major-label debut in 2020, she has gone from viral sensation (her debut single "Usseewa" became a cultural phenomenon in Japan) to international star.
Her songs for the anime film ONE PIECE FILM RED, performed in character as "Uta", became worldwide hits, with tracks like "New Genesis" and "Tot Musica" racking up hundreds of millions of streams. In 2024, she completed her first world tour, "Wish," performing in venues across North America, Europe, and Asia. In 2025, she was named the #1 most-streamed Japanese artist internationally on Spotify.
This summer, Ado is also set to perform at Lollapalooza in the United States before returning to Japan for her SUMMER SONIC headlining set, a triumphant homecoming on the biggest stage Japan's festival scene has to offer.
What makes Ado unique in the festival world is her signature style: she never reveals her face. Performing behind elaborate visual productions, she lets her extraordinary vocal power speak for itself, a concept that has clearly resonated across cultures and borders.
The Yen Crisis and Festival Economics
Shimizu also addressed a pressing reality facing Japanese festival organizers: the weak yen. With the exchange rate hovering around ¥160 to the dollar (roughly $1 = ¥160), the cost of booking international artists has soared.
"With the yen at 160 to the dollar and likely to weaken further, I don't know how many more overseas artists we can add," Shimizu acknowledged. "But as a festival, we've done everything we can."
He credited cooperation from artists across Japan, South Korea, and other Asian countries for assembling a lineup worthy of the 25th-anniversary milestone. The selection of two Japanese headliners can be seen as both a reflection of economic constraints and a testament to the genuine global appeal of Japan's music scene.
BE:FIRST, MAZZEL, Aina The End, and More Join the Lineup
The fourth-wave artist announcement brought several exciting additions beyond Ado:
BE:FIRST (Tokyo Day 2), One of Japan's hottest boy groups, produced by SKY-HI through his BMSG label. Known for their polished choreography and vocal harmonies, they've been rapidly building an international fanbase.
MAZZEL (Tokyo Day 2 / Osaka Day 3), Another BMSG group representing the next generation of Japanese dance-vocal acts, with a fresh, energetic style that bridges J-pop and global pop trends.
Aina The End (Tokyo Day 1 / Osaka Day 2), Former member of the iconic idol group BiSH, now a solo artist known for her emotionally raw performances and genre-defying creativity. She also performs the opening theme for the current ONE PIECE anime arc.
Also confirmed: Saucy Dog, Chilli Beans., BAND-MAID (the all-female rock band with a massive overseas following), and Midnight Til Morning, a transpacific pop-rock band.
The Full Picture: A Truly International Festival
The overall lineup for SUMMER SONIC 2026 reads like a who's who of global music. Alongside the headliners, confirmed artists include BUMP OF CHICKEN, Sakanaction, Jamiroquai, David Byrne, JENNIE (BLACKPINK), LE SSERAFIM, BABYMETAL (curating the SONIC "METAL" STAGE), Suede, Steve Lacy, FKA twigs, Kasabian, Pentatonix, Suchmos, Cornelius, mgk, and many more.
Additional artists are expected throughout April, with special programming including Latin and '90s dance music on Tokyo's Beach Stage, plus midnight collaborative performances.
Ticket Information
Official priority ticket sales are currently open for 1-DAY tickets and PLATINUM tickets (3-day passes with special perks). This presale is available to all audiences worldwide on a first-come, first-served basis. Sales will end once allocated tickets are gone, and a general sale may not follow, so international fans planning to attend should act quickly.

Fallback, or Firepower?
For most of its 25-year history, SUMMER SONIC's headliners have been Western heavyweights: Metallica, Radiohead, Beyoncé. Now two Japanese acts share that slot. But when the promoter himself says the rapper starting with A fell through and that the dollar is at ¥160, reading this bill as a pure merit ranking doesn't hold. Nor does calling Ado a stopgap, given she was Spotify's most-streamed Japanese artist abroad last year and is playing Lollapalooza this summer. Both things are true at once, and that is what this year's SUMMER SONIC actually is.
