🎮 A cheerful side-scroller about a green dinosaur exploring a talking encyclopedia probably isn't the game most people would pick as a turning point in Nintendo's engineering culture. But here we are. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, a Switch 2 exclusive launching May 21, has quietly become the first game ever published by Nintendo to run on Unreal Engine 5 — and the reveal didn't come from a press release. It came from someone digging through preload license files.
For a company that spent most of its history insisting on proprietary tech, this is a much bigger deal than the game's friendly cover art suggests.
How dataminers cracked it open
The smoking gun showed up in the Switch 2 preload for the digital version. Brazilian Nintendo outlet UniversoNintendo editor Felipe Lima — credited alongside a datamining contact called Pokemaniac — spotted licensing entries for three plugins inside the game's files: SideFXLabs, Stylized Post Process, and KawaiiPhysics.
That trio matters because all three only exist in their current form for Unreal Engine 5. The "Stylized Post Process" plugin in particular is a free open-source toolkit by Japanese 3D artist ymt3d, distributed on GitHub specifically for UE5. The presence of these plugins as licensed components is, basically, a fingerprint.
The Japanese box art and download card had already shown the Unreal Engine logo, so people knew it was Unreal of some flavor. The question had been: UE4, like Yoshi's Crafted World? Or the newer, heavier UE5? The preload settled it. Outlets including Nintendo Life, GoNintendo, Nintendo Wire, Gameranx, and Japan's AUTOMATON picked up the story within hours.
Nintendo itself has stayed quiet — which is itself the Nintendo way.
Why this isn't just engine nerd trivia
Nintendo has used Unreal Engine before. The pattern, though, has been narrow:

Notice the column on the right. Until Pikmin 4, every Unreal-powered "Nintendo" game was actually built by an outside studio Nintendo had hired. Pikmin 4 was the first time Nintendo's internal teams shipped a game with Unreal in the mix — and even then, only blended with the company's proprietary engine.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book's developer hasn't been officially announced, but Good-Feel is the obvious bet. They built the previous Yoshi platformer on UE4. They built Princess Peach: Showtime! on UE4. They use KawaiiPhysics. The fingerprint matches.
What's different here is the version jump. UE5 is not a polite upgrade over UE4 — it's an engine with much heavier features (Lumen for dynamic lighting, Nanite for geometry streaming) and a reputation, fair or not, for chewing through hardware on platforms far more powerful than Switch 2.
The Switch 2 / UE5 anxiety
Ever since Switch 2's specs were detailed, a quiet worry has hung over the hardware: would it actually run modern Unreal Engine 5 games well?
The launch window didn't fully settle that. Cronos: The New Dawn, Fortnite, and Split Fiction all shipped on the system as UE5 games — but, as outlets like Wccftech have noted, they did so with Lumen and Nanite either disabled or stripped down. Those are precisely the features that justify UE5 over UE4 in the first place. A UE5 game without them is, in a sense, an expensive UE4 game.
Yoshi's stylized children's-book look doesn't really need Lumen or Nanite. The art direction leans on hand-painted textures, low-frame-rate keyframe animation, and pencil-line outlines — a look that's about restraint, not realism. So this isn't the title that will prove Switch 2 can render photoreal UE5 worlds. What it does prove is that the UE5 toolchain itself works on the hardware, that Nintendo's first-party processes can ship something through it, and that a polished 60fps UE5 game on Switch 2 is achievable when the visual ambitions match the silicon.
That distinction matters for what comes next. If Witcher 4, Gears of War: E-Day, or other big UE5 third-party games are ever going to reach Switch 2 in usable form, Yoshi is part of the proof of concept. As one ResetEra commenter put it, this is the test run.
"The lizard keeps getting used as the engine test bed"
On Japan's social platforms, there's been a running joke that Nintendo treats Yoshi as its engine-experiment guinea pig. The previous game shipped on UE4 right as that engine was maturing. This one ships on UE5. Cute green dinosaur, hard-nosed technical agenda.
There's truth to the joke. Yoshi games tend to be lower-risk than mainline Mario. They sell well enough, they have a defined audience, and their stylized art lets the team focus on technology without exposing photorealistic flaws. If Nintendo wants to learn UE5 at production scale before staking Zelda or Metroid on it, this is exactly the property to do it with.
The other half of the joke is that Yoshi has become the franchise where Nintendo learns to let go. Each entry pushes the company a little further from in-house-only development. Crafted World in 2019 normalized outsourcing a Yoshi platformer to Good-Feel using Unreal. Mysterious Book normalizes doing it on the newest version of the most widely-used commercial engine on the planet.
Why Nintendo is leaning into Unreal anyway
The strategic logic is straightforward.
Hiring. A new graduate joining Nintendo's external partner studios in 2026 has probably already built portfolio work in UE5. Hiring them and asking them to learn a proprietary engine costs months. Letting them use what they already know costs nothing.
Third-party gravity. Game Developers Conference 2026 data showed Unreal Engine has overtaken Unity in adoption among developers for the first time. Every studio outside Nintendo is centering its workflows on it. Pretending the industry isn't going that direction would isolate the platform.
Tool reuse. Plugins like KawaiiPhysics — used in Princess Peach: Showtime! and now apparently here — let smaller teams achieve hair, cloth, and squash-and-stretch motion that would otherwise need bespoke engine work. Standardizing on UE5 means studios can lift these tools across projects.
The Switch 2 calculus. Nintendo's new console needs a broader third-party library than the original Switch ever managed. Proving Unreal Engine 5 ships cleanly on the hardware, with first-party blessing, is a quiet signal to every publisher considering a Switch 2 SKU. The lizard isn't just testing the engine for Nintendo. He's testing it for everyone.
What we still don't know
A few things remain genuinely unclear:
- The developer. Good-Feel is the consensus guess, but Nintendo hasn't confirmed. The credits at launch will close that question.
- Lumen / Nanite usage. Given the art style, it would be a surprise if the game leans on either. But until Digital Foundry or a similar technical outlet does a teardown, we won't know exactly which UE5 systems are actually active and which were stripped.
- Performance target. Yoshi platformers have historically targeted 60fps. Whether Mysterious Book holds that consistently on Switch 2 with UE5's overhead is the kind of detail that won't be settled until release-day captures arrive.
- What's next. If this works, the next Nintendo-published UE5 game becomes the real story. Pikmin? A 2D Metroid? A future Star Fox? A revived classic on a modern engine? Anything's on the board.
The bigger picture
There's a tendency to read every Nintendo move as either a tribute to its past or a defense of its peculiarity. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book fits neither story. It's a small, charming game running on the most generic, industry-standard engine available — and that's what makes it interesting.
For decades Nintendo's identity was bound up in doing things its own way: its own controllers, its own architectures, its own engines. The Switch 2 era is shaping up differently. The hardware uses an NVIDIA chip that's closer to industry-norm GPUs than anything Nintendo has shipped in years. The flagship Yoshi game uses the same engine Epic Games licenses to thousands of studios. Even the company's pricing — physical $69.99, digital $59.99 — is moving toward industry norms.
You can read that as Nintendo conceding ground. Or you can read it as Nintendo realizing that the games are what made it Nintendo, and the engines underneath were never the point.
The talking book in Mysterious Book is named Mr. E. Nintendo's UE5 transition has, until this weekend, been a mystery too. The page just turned.
