Amazon Prime Video has announced worldwide exclusive streaming of Fist of the North Star and Ghost in the Shell. Legendary Japanese IP is returning to the world stage via streaming. Here is why Amazon is getting serious about the fight for "anime supremacy" in a market where Netflix, Crunchyroll and Disney+ are all competing.

Prime Video's "International Originals" Strategy

On February 12, 2026, "Prime Video Presents: International Originals event" was held for the first time in London. It was Amazon's first global showcase dedicated to original content from outside the English-speaking world.

Gaurav Gandhi, Prime Video's VP for APAC and ANZ, who led the event, said, "Content from Japan, South Korea and India is among the most-watched on Prime Video beyond its home countries," stressing the global potential of content from Asia.

Of the lineup announced, the three Japanese anime titles drew particular attention.

Fist of the North Star: A Brand-New Reboot for the 40th Anniversary

Fist of the North Star began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1983 and has sold more than 100 million copies. The story of Kenshiro, successor to the legendary assassination art Hokuto Shinken, fighting worthy rivals while carrying love and sorrow in a world devastated by nuclear war, is known worldwide along with the line "You are already dead."

The newly announced reboot, marking the original's 40th anniversary, is produced by TMS Entertainment. Directed by Hiroshi Maeda with series composition by Kazuhiko Inukai, it is being rebuilt as a mix of CG and hand-drawn animation. The cast has been entirely replaced, with Shunsuke Takeuchi as Kenshiro, Saori Hayami as Yuria and Koji Yusa as Shin.

It streams exclusively on Prime Video worldwide except mainland China. It is the first new anime in 18 years since the 2008 film, and how the IP is received in the global market is a major point of interest.

Ghost in the Shell: The Cyberpunk Landmark Returns

The other highlight is a new TV anime of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell. Since serialization began in 1989, the manga is said to have sold more than 4.2 million copies worldwide. Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film is often cited as an influence on The Matrix and is known for popularizing cyberpunk around the world.

The new Ghost in the Shell streams exclusively worldwide from July 2026 (with exclusive early streaming in Japan, excluding Russia and China). Animation is by Science SARU, directed by Mokochan, with series composition and scripts by Akutagawa Prize-winning author Toh EnJoe. In Japan it will also air on terrestrial TV in the "Hi-Anibal!!" slot on the Kansai TV and Fuji TV network.

Set in a hyper-networked city in 2029 and following Public Security Section 9 led by full-body cyborg Motoko Kusanagi, the series has themes that resonate even more deeply now that AI and cybersecurity are real-world issues.

The Third Title: From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Season 2

The third Japanese title, season 2 of the light-novel fantasy anime From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman, also streams exclusively worldwide from July 2026. Season 1 entered Prime Video's Top 10 in more than 45 countries, a success story proving global demand for Japan's "narou-kei" content (fantasy works originating on novel-posting sites).

The Battle for Anime Supremacy in the Streaming Era

Prime Video's move clearly reflects the intensifying competition in anime streaming.

Private market research puts the global anime market at about $42.8 billion in 2024, with some estimates reaching $80.5 billion by 2035. Figures vary widely by definition; the Association of Japanese Animations says the global anime market doubled over the ten years from 2013 to 2023 to about $22 billion (¥3.3 trillion). On any measure, internet streaming is growing fastest. In Japan, streaming revenue in 2023 rose more than 50% year on year to about ¥250 billion (about $1.6 billion).

The competition over this huge market is fierce. Sony's Crunchyroll has established itself as the anime-specialist platform and is expanding direct investment in production committees. Netflix has poured huge sums into its own original anime, and Disney+ is adding exclusive titles too. And Prime Video has now declared, "As the best home for anime in Japan, we want to be the preferred destination for anime globally as well."

In the winter 2026 season alone, Golden Kamuy: The Final Chapter was a Prime Video exclusive and Fire Force a Netflix exclusive, as popular titles are increasingly locked up. For viewers, "having to subscribe to a different service for each show you want to watch" is becoming the norm.

How Will Japan's IP Strategy Change?

Prime Video's announcement signals a structural change that goes beyond simply acquiring streaming rights.

Traditionally, Japan's anime business has relied on the "production committee" model. Multiple companies, including TV stations, publishers and toy makers, invest together, spreading risk in exchange for sharing profits; this system has long supported Japan's anime industry.

But as global streaming platforms spend huge sums to win exclusive rights, this structure is also changing. Money from overseas platforms raises production budgets and improves visual quality, but there are also warnings about the risk of IP rights becoming concentrated in foreign companies.

Sony Group's Aniplex and Crunchyroll setting up the joint venture "HAYATE" in March 2025 is a response to this trend. The company combines Aniplex's production capabilities with Crunchyroll's distribution network to plan works for global audiences, with Aniplex's Masanori Miyake as chairman and CEO. On the Japanese side, too, efforts are under way to keep control of IP value.

The Scale of 240 Countries and 36 Languages

Prime Video emphasized its distribution scale. All titles are available in more than 240 countries and territories, with subtitles in up to 36 languages and dubs in 22. It is a big change from the days when overseas fans had no choice but fansubs or piracy. Simultaneous official distribution worldwide helps fight piracy and also helps return revenue to Japanese creators.

Gandhi's remark that "content from Asia is no longer niche but is becoming a mainstay of global entertainment" is backed by the numbers. In Prime Video's annual viewing rankings for non-English content, titles from Japan, South Korea and India dominate the top, and the Spanish-language Culpables series has drawn more than 100 million viewers worldwide.

Open Questions: Divided Fans and Concentrated Rights

In Japan, there are hopes for the revival of classic IP, but also concerns that "exclusive streaming divides fans" and "it's worrying to have IP controlled by foreign platforms." Content business in the streaming era raises not only questions of quality, but of who manages the IP and who the profits go back to.

[Developments after publication] Two of the three announced titles have since launched. Fist of the North Star began airing on TOKYO MX and BS11 at 25:00 on April 10, 2026, streaming exclusively worldwide on Prime Video. Its first cour ended in June.

Ghost in the Shell began airing on the Kansai TV and Fuji TV network at 23:00 on July 7, 2026, with the fastest unlimited streaming in Japan on Prime Video from 23:30 the same day and exclusive overseas streaming starting simultaneously. The ending theme is MILLENNIUM PARADE's "Blue." In Japan, however, it also began streaming from July 8 on U-NEXT, d Anime Store, DMM TV, Netflix and others, so "exclusive" applies only to the fastest streaming window.
