So when Square Enix launched FF7 Remake Intergrade on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on January 22, 2026, a wave of anxiety swept through the fan community.

The concern was straightforward: if the trilogy's finale has to run on the relatively less powerful Switch 2 and Xbox Series S, won't the developers have to hold back on PS5 and PC to accommodate those platforms? Hamaguchi's Answer: "Our Development Structure Doesn't Work That Way"

Hamaguchi was direct from the start: the multiplatform shift will not lower the quality of Part 3. He acknowledged the fan anxiety with good humor, noting that he realizes he'll "just have to keep saying it", before diving into a detailed technical explanation structured around four key components of game development.

ROM: Not an Issue

Traditional cartridge-based consoles have historically forced developers to compress data to fit physical media. However, the Switch 2 uses a key card download system for its retail releases, eliminating any need to reduce game data size. This means there's zero impact on other platforms.

RAM: Switch 2 Is Actually Easy to Work With

Hamaguchi surprised some by praising the Switch 2's memory capacity, calling it "ample" and noting it makes the platform relatively easy to develop for. Xbox Series S, often cited as the bottleneck for multiplatform games due to limited RAM, is handled through platform-specific optimization, a challenge, but one that doesn't constrain other versions.

CPU: A Generational Shift in Design Philosophy

The industry's move from 30fps to 60fps on consoles has actually made multiplatform development easier, not harder. Hamaguchi explained that his team designs games to run at 30fps on lower-spec hardware like Switch 2 and Xbox Series S, which naturally allows 60fps on high-end platforms. They don't max out a high-end CPU at 30fps and call it a day.

For higher-spec hardware, the team scales up density, more NPCs populating towns, richer environmental detail, rather than redesigning the core game. This approach means lower-spec platforms get the same game experience, just with fewer background characters walking around.

GPU: The Heart of the Debate

This is what fans care about most, and Hamaguchi gave his most detailed answer here. The key revelation: PC is the lead development platform, not PS5. All 3D assets are created at maximum quality for high-end PCs first, then scaled down for each console.

In fact, Hamaguchi revealed that even PS5 and PS5 Pro are classified internally as "mid-range" platforms. Compared to high-end PC, PS5 runs textures at roughly 1.5–2x lower resolution, meshes at 1.5–2x lower detail, and polygon counts at over 3x fewer. The lowest-spec platform currently supported? Steam Deck, which runs at roughly half of PS5's settings.

This top-down approach, which Hamaguchi calls "reduction", means the highest-quality version is always the starting point. Each platform gets a version tailored to its capabilities through careful human-reviewed tuning, not just automatic downscaling.

"Shouldn't Those Resources Go to New Content Instead?"

AUTOMATON's interviewer pressed further with a pointed question: if porting takes developer resources, wouldn't those be better spent on new content or higher-quality assets for Part 3?

Hamaguchi's response addressed both the business and personal sides. On the business front, more platforms mean more players mean more sales, which translates directly to a bigger development budget for Part 3. But his honest answer was simpler: as a creator, knowing more people can experience the game he helped build is the most rewarding part.

Crucially, Hamaguchi also revealed that the porting team operates independently from the Part 3 development team. The two groups are completely separate within his organization, so port work doesn't steal resources from the new game.

Part 3 Development Is "Going Very Smoothly"

In a separate AUTOMATON interview from late February 2026, Hamaguchi shared an encouraging update: development was essentially on schedule, the game was already playable, and the team was in its "final push" phase of polish. No official title had been announced at that point, though he said something would be shared before long.

It was. The third entry is Final Fantasy VII Revelation, due in spring 2027 on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store on Windows), Nintendo Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The simultaneous multiplatform launch this whole interview was about is exactly what shipped on the schedule.

The game continues using a customized version of Unreal Engine 4 rather than upgrading to UE5, a decision based on the team's deep familiarity with their existing toolset.

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (the second installment) arrives on Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on June 3, 2026, ensuring players on all platforms can catch up before the trilogy's conclusion.

A Common Industry Practice, Uncommonly Well Explained

What makes this interview stand out isn't the development approach itself, building for high-end first and scaling down is standard practice across the industry. It's how openly and technically Hamaguchi explained it. Rather than dismissing concerns with vague PR language, he walked through each hardware component, acknowledged the valid engineering challenges, and gave specific comparisons.

What is unusual is the disclosure itself. Studios rarely say out loud that they classify PS5 as mid-range internally, or hand over multipliers for texture size and polygon counts against a high-end PC target. That is engineering talk, not messaging.
