🏴‍☠️ Four letters. That was the whole announcement, and it was enough to put fans around the world into full detective mode.

On August 23, 2026, two new ONE PIECE films were revealed at once. The first, ONE PIECE FILM GOD VALLEY, opens in summer 2027; the God Valley Incident sits 38 years back in the story and is already in the manga, so the title alone tells you what it is. The second is the problem. It arrives in 2029, it is called ONE PIECE FILM BAAD, and that is genuinely everything anyone knows.

Heads up: this piece names characters and events from the later stretch of the manga.

Four letters, handwritten by Oda

The reveal came at ONE PIECE DAY '26, held August 22 and 23 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, just outside Tokyo. A teaser rolled right after the main stage wrapped on day two.

The 2027 and 2029 slots are not arbitrary. The manga turns 30 on July 22, 2027; the TV anime turns 30 on October 20, 2029. One film for each birthday.

The GOD VALLEY logo looks the way a ONE PIECE film logo is supposed to look. BAAD does not. It is written in Eiichiro Oda's own hand, and the D is noticeably bigger than the letters around it.

Nothing else was announced: no plot, no characters, no director, no staff.

How Japanese fans are reading it

Sort through Japanese social media and the theories cluster into five.

The most popular one is also the simplest: the Will of D. The logo's D is large, 2029 is a milestone year, and the identity of the D. clan is the biggest unanswered question in the series. Fans want the anniversary film to be the one that finally opens that box.

Running close behind is Blackbeard, reached by two separate routes. One reads BAAD as letters lifted out of BlAckbeArD. The other reads it as a superlative of "bad," meaning the worst man alive. Either path lands on the same pirate, and the people backing it usually pair the theory with a wish to finally watch the Rocky Port Incident animated.

The third barely appears in Japanese news coverage but keeps getting posted independently on X: Born As A D. An acronym. It grew out of a practical observation, which is that nobody can actually pronounce "BAAD," so it is probably initials. Its strength is that it folds the first two theories into one.

The last two are shorter. One links the title to Baal, the demon from the Bible, and from there to Im. The other points at the Buccaneer bloodline, which ties straight into what GOD VALLEY covers in 2027. Both sit comfortably next to where the manga currently is.

Thirty years ago, a band had the same name

There is a real Japanese rock band called BAAD. Their single "Kimi ga Suki da to Sakebitai," released December 1, 1993, became the first opening theme of the SLAM DUNK anime, another Weekly Shonen Jump property. For anyone who grew up in Japan the association is close to reflexive. It barely surfaces on overseas boards for the simple reason that the band never traveled.

It was treated as a joke. But the band was named by producer Daiyuki Nagato, and the name is said to mean not BIRD but the superlative of "bad." In Japanese it is pronounced baado.

So the reading Japanese fans are currently applying to a 2029 anime film, the most bad, is the exact reading a rock band built its name on three decades ago using the same spelling.

Then the coincidence doubled. The night after the announcement, BAAD turned up as a surprise guest on a Japanese variety show. For about two days, searching BAAD in Japan returned a scrambled mix of movie theories and 1990s nostalgia.

Overseas fans reached for different dictionaries

Forums outside Japan started theorizing the same day. The oversized D got spotted everywhere, and the jump to the Will of D is universal. Blackbeard came up too.

The split happens after that. Overseas fans went hunting in languages other than English. Someone pointed out that in Arabic and Urdu, baad means "after" or "next." A Somali reading was floated and then knocked down by an actual Somali speaker in the same thread. Where Japanese fans are working the problem as an English acronym, the international boards turned it into a translation exercise.

There is also a question being asked abroad that barely registers in Japan: is this film even canon? Some readers argue the logo's styling looks deliberately detached from the main story's visual world, the way earlier non-canon entries did. Because GOD VALLEY is clearly adapting manga material, BAAD's status looks murkier by comparison.

So when does anyone actually get to see it?

Not everyone is celebrating. Does that mean no ONE PIECE film in 2028? Will the God Valley arc get pulled out of the TV anime and handed to a movie instead? And 2029 is, frankly, a long way off. Those complaints are all over Japanese timelines too.

ONE PIECE FILM RED opened August 6, 2022 and took 2.25 billion yen, about $14 million at the August 24, 2026 exchange rate, across its opening Saturday and Sunday, the strongest start in the series. Counting an unusual encore run the following year, it finished at 14.74 million admissions and 20.33 billion yen, roughly $128 million. Toei Animation's stock closed at 2,988 yen on August 24, up 153 yen on the day, on the back of the two-film announcement. Fan theorizing, converted into a share price.

International releases are the open question. Everything officially confirmed so far covers Japanese theaters only, and no overseas dates exist for either film.

There is a template, though. FILM RED opened in Japan on August 6. Germany and Austria got it on October 13; Australia and New Zealand followed on November 3, and North America on November 4. Crunchyroll and Toei Animation handled the worldwide rollout. Two to three months behind Japan is the working assumption.

For BAAD, the film itself is more than three years out, and nobody has promised the title will be explained before then.

It says something about a series this old that an announcement carrying almost nothing but a title can generate this much serious analysis. When a franchise where you live drops a reveal with nothing inside it, what do fans do with the empty space?
