After nearly 20 years stuck in Hollywood's notorious "development hell," the live-action Metal Gear Solid movie is finally showing signs of life. The directing duo behind last year's blockbuster Final Destination: Bloodlines has been tapped to helm the project, replacing long-attached director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and signaling a complete creative overhaul.
A Hot New Directing Duo Takes the Reins
On April 9, 2026, Sony Pictures announced that filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein have signed a sweeping first-look deal covering all of the studio's film labels. As the centerpiece of this partnership, the pair will co-direct the live-action adaptation of Hideo Kojima's legendary stealth-action franchise, Metal Gear Solid, for Columbia Pictures.
Lipovsky and Stein became one of Hollywood's most in-demand duos after directing Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025), which earned approximately $317 million worldwide on a $50 million budget, making it both the highest-grossing and best-reviewed installment in the franchise's history. The pair originally met 17 years ago as competitors on Steven Spielberg's filmmaking reality show "On the Lot" and broke out with their indie sci-fi film Freaks (2018), which became one of the biggest sales at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In their statement, the directors expressed deep reverence for the source material: "Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima's iconic characters and unforgettable world to life."
Two Decades of Development Hell
The road to a Metal Gear Solid movie has been extraordinarily long and winding. The concept was first teased at E3 2006, and Konami formally announced the project in 2012. In 2014, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, known for Kong: Skull Island and a passionate MGS fan with a personal friendship with Kojima, was brought on to direct. He described his vision as "very Kojima, punk rock, and subversive."
Screenwriter Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Detective Pikachu) was attached in 2017, and in December 2020, Oscar Isaac (the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Dune) was announced as Solid Snake, a role he had publicly expressed interest in for years. Isaac confirmed in 2022 that the project was still alive, joking that they were "climbing through air ducts, looking for the story."
But no further concrete updates materialized. The MGS movie became one of Hollywood's most prominent examples of a project trapped in development limbo. Notably, Vogt-Roberts had also been attached to a live-action Gundam film at one point before quietly departing that project as well.
Sony's All-In Bet on Lipovsky & Stein
What makes this announcement significant beyond a simple director swap is the scope of Sony's commitment. The studio's deal with Lipovsky and Stein's newly formed production company, Wonderlab, spans multiple projects across all Sony labels. Beyond Metal Gear Solid, the duo is developing an animated Venom film for Sony Pictures Animation, an original sci-fi epic called The Earthling for Columbia Pictures, and has additional projects at Warner Bros. (Gremlins 3), Paramount (The Traveler), and Universal (Long Lost). They're also completing a sequel to Freaks.
Veteran producers Avi Arad and Ari Arad, the father-son team behind Marvel franchises including Spider-Man, X-Men, and Iron Man, remain attached as producers, as they have been since the project's formal announcement in 2012.
Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch praised the duo as "thrilling storytellers, masters of visuals and suspense, and two of the most impressive director/producers working today."
Oscar Isaac Has Left the Project
Oscar Isaac, previously announced as Solid Snake, confirmed in an April 2026 interview that he is no longer attached to the film, calling it a dream for someone else to realize. With a new creative team at the helm, a full reboot including a fresh casting search now looks likely. No details have been shared about the script's status or a potential release timeline.
However, the timing may work in the film's favor. Video game adaptations are experiencing an unprecedented golden age, with the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise, Fallout, and The Last of Us proving that gaming IP can be massive entertainment properties. The Metal Gear franchise itself got a boost in 2025 when Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of the beloved third installment, surpassed one million units sold within 24 hours of its August launch, taking total franchise sales past 65 million.
While Hideo Kojima himself does not appear to be directly involved in the film, his own studio Kojima Productions has multiple Hollywood projects in motion, including a live-action Death Stranding film with A24 and a Death Stranding anime series for Disney+.
Can MGS Survive the Leap to Film?
Adapting Metal Gear Solid presents unique challenges that go beyond typical video game movies. The series is known for its extraordinarily long cutscenes (Metal Gear Solid 4 alone has over eight hours of cinematics), metafictional storytelling techniques that deliberately break the fourth wall, and themes spanning nuclear proliferation, genetic destiny, and the nature of warfare. Condensing this into a two-hour theatrical experience will require bold creative choices.
That said, Lipovsky and Stein's track record of reinvigorating a dormant franchise with Bloodlines, and their stated respect for Kojima's vision, suggests they understand the gravity of the task. For fans who have waited since 2006 for Snake to reach the silver screen, this may be the most promising development yet.
In Japan, reactions range from cautious optimism about the fresh creative team to nostalgia for the Vogt-Roberts era and anxiety about whether anyone can truly capture Kojima's singular storytelling on film.
