🎮 The man who designed nearly every Game Boy you ever owned, and the man who directed every WarioWare microgame, are now teaching at the same university. On April 28, 2026, Osaka Electro-Communication University announced that Kenichi Sugino — Nintendo's veteran handheld designer of 37 years — and Goro Abe, the chief director behind all 12 WarioWare titles, joined the faculty as professors. It's a story about Japan's deepening generational shift inside Nintendo, and about how Japanese game education differs in surprising ways from DigiPen or USC.

Two industry legends, one campus

Japanese game industry outlet gamebiz reported on April 28 that Osaka Electro-Communication University, a private institution in Osaka Prefecture, has welcomed two former Nintendo creators as full professors starting in April 2026. The university opened its Department of Digital Games — one of the first such programs in Japan — back in 2003, giving it 23 years of track record in game education. With these two appointments, the school is layering hands-on industry knowledge on top of that academic foundation.

Kenichi Sugino has joined the Department of Electronic Mechanical Engineering (Robotics) within the Faculty of Engineering. Sugino joined Nintendo in April 1989 and spent the next 37 years working on portable consoles. As a product designer he led the visual and ergonomic design of the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. He then moved up to design director for the Nintendo DS and 3DS. According to Wikipedia and other industry sources, his portfolio also includes the Game Boy Advance SP, the diminutive Game Boy Micro, and notably the commercially disastrous Virtual Boy.

Goro Abe has joined the brand-new "Game and Social Design Program" within the Department of Digital Games at the Faculty of Information Science. Born in 1975, Abe graduated from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Sciences and Nursing — an unusual academic background for a games veteran. He briefly worked at Ascii Corporation in 1996 before joining Nintendo in 1999. His first credit was as a programmer on Wario Land 4 for Game Boy Advance, after which he served as programmer-designer on the original WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! in 2003. From the GameCube release WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$! onward, he directed or co-directed every WarioWare game across roughly two decades — a stretch unmatched by almost any other game director on a single franchise.

"Wasteful use of the latest technology"

Some international readers may be only vaguely familiar with the WarioWare series, so a quick primer: WarioWare games consist of dozens of "microgames" — single-rule games that last about five seconds each — chained together at increasing speed. Tap, twist, flick, shake, balance, blow, photograph, scribble. The series has shipped on basically every Nintendo platform of the last twenty years, and it has done so by being the showcase product for whatever weird new input the hardware adds. Touch screen on DS, motion sensor in the GBA cartridge, Wii Remote, 3DS stereoscopic display, Joy-Con motion controls, Switch HD rumble — WarioWare is where Nintendo's hardware oddities go to be celebrated and ridiculed at the same time.

Abe's personal motto for this work is wonderfully Japanese: saishin gijutsu no muda-zukai — "wasteful use of the latest technology." Where most studios approach a new piece of hardware by asking "what's the most impressive thing we can do with this?" Abe and his teams asked "what's the silliest thing we can do with this?" The result was games like WarioWare: Snapped! that used the DSi's then-novel front camera to put your real face into 30 absurd microgames, or WarioWare: Smooth Moves on Wii, which built nearly 200 microgames around different ways to hold and wave the Wii Remote — and which many critics still rate as one of the Wii's best launch-window titles.

After his March 9 announcement that he was leaving Nintendo, Abe clarified on X that becoming a professor doesn't mean retiring from making games. He plans to keep producing what he called "small experimental games with unconventional mechanics that don't fit standard commercial models," along with industry-academia collaborations on gamified social services. The new "Game and Social Design Program" he's joining is essentially named after that mission.

The Game Boy designer who got "traumatized" by 3D

Sugino's most-quoted line in industry interviews captures Nintendo's hardware philosophy in one sentence: "Just because it's a portable game system doesn't mean small is good enough — it has to feel good in your hands as something to play games with." That ergonomic obsession is why Game Boy Advance launched with a horizontal layout that broke twelve years of vertical Game Boy tradition.

The most amusing arc in Sugino's career, though, involves 3D. He worked on the Virtual Boy — Nintendo's red-LED stereoscopic console that died after about six months on the market in 1995, one of the only outright commercial flops in Nintendo's history. In a famous "Iwata Asks" interview from the 3DS launch era, the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata teased Sugino: "You actually worked on Virtual Boy, didn't you (laughs)." Sugino admitted he had been "traumatized" by 3D and instinctively pushed back on the 3DS's stereoscopic concept when it was first proposed. Then he saw the demo running, and converted on the spot. That same designer who had been burned by 3D fifteen years earlier ended up shaping the design of Nintendo's most successful 3D handheld.

His placement at the Faculty of Engineering's Robotics department, rather than in the Digital Games faculty alongside Abe, is a deliberate choice by the university. The signal is that Sugino's expertise in industrial design — making physical objects that are pleasant to hold and operate — has applications well beyond games, into robotics, consumer electronics, and tactile product design more broadly.

The wave of Nintendo departures

For overseas Nintendo fans, the bigger story here is the gathering pattern. Abe is one of several high-profile veterans to leave the company in the past 12-18 months, including:

  • Kensuke Tanabe, the producer who oversaw the Metroid Prime and Paper Mario series. He confirmed that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond would be his final Nintendo project.
  • Hideki Konno, who led Mario Kart development and was central to the 3DS hardware project.
  • Goro Abe, departing at age 51 — well before retirement age in Japan.

Sugino's move to academia, while framed by the university as an "appointment" rather than a "retirement," fits the same pattern: senior staff stepping back from the front lines. Industry watchers note that Nintendo of Japan's average employee tenure has historically run around 14 years (versus 8-11 years at Nintendo's overseas subsidiaries), so this kind of long-tenured exit is unusual by Japanese standards but normal by Silicon Valley standards. The shift suggests that Nintendo, like the rest of the Japanese game industry, is entering a real generational transition — the developers who built the company's Heisei-era (1989-2019) identity are moving on.

This is part of a broader pattern across Japanese games: Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami left Tango Gameworks to found Unbound Games. Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya left PlatinumGames to go independent. The destinations vary, but the common thread is veteran Japanese creators reclaiming creative agency for the second half of their careers.

How Japanese game education differs from DigiPen and USC

If you ask an American or European teenager where to study to become a game developer, the first names that come up are usually DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, Washington — conveniently located near Nintendo of America — and USC's Interactive Media & Games Division in Los Angeles. DigiPen has ranked in The Princeton Review's top game design schools for 17 years running, and its graduates show up in the credits of more than 2,000 commercial games shipped at Epic, Activision, Microsoft, and yes, Nintendo of America.

Japanese game education runs on different rails. Osaka Electro-Communication's Department of Digital Games dates to 2003 — younger than DigiPen, which opened its game program in 1988 — but the structural difference is more interesting than the age gap. Where DigiPen and USC's USC Games optimize for "graduate ready to ship AAA" outcomes, Japanese game programs typically blend that vocational track with a research-oriented one focused on what's broadly called "social design through games." That includes gamification of elderly care, medical rehabilitation, classroom education, and regional revitalization — areas where games are a research instrument rather than the end product.

Abe's new program — explicitly called "Game and Social Design" — is the cleanest expression of this Japanese model. It's built around the premise that someone who spent two decades making people laugh at five-second microgames has transferable expertise for, say, designing rehabilitation exercises that elderly patients actually want to do. Whether Sugino and Abe's transplant of Nintendo's R&D culture into a Japanese university produces interesting new research — and whether DigiPen-style polish or USC-style narrative ambition gets cross-pollinated in either direction — is something worth watching from outside Japan.

Passing the torch — and the "wasteful technology" mindset

Eighteen-year-olds entering Osaka Electro-Communication this year will be taught by people whose Nintendo careers started before they were born. That's a remarkable transfer of institutional knowledge — but it's also a marker that the people who grew up playing Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and the original WarioWare are now old enough to be teaching the next generation. The 30s-and-40s cohort that consumed those products has reached the age of producing the cohort that produces the next ones.

Abe's "wasteful use of the latest technology" mantra might turn out to be useful currency for Japanese students looking at a global game market dominated by 200-million-dollar AAA productions. The recent breakout success of Sandfall Interactive's Expedition 33 — a French studio of 30 people delivering a prestige JRPG — has reopened conversations across the industry about what "small but precise" can still achieve. A Japanese teaching tradition built on "make it weird, make it personal, do something the hardware wasn't designed for" might actually be very well aligned with that direction of travel.
