🌸 What if Japan's holiest cherry trees—revered for 1,300 years as sacred icons—were being eaten alive from the inside? In October 2025, frass (a mix of larval droppings and wood shavings) was found at the foot of a wild cherry tree on Mount Yoshino in Nara, a UNESCO World Heritage site home to roughly 30,000 cherry trees. Experts confirmed the culprit: Aromia bungii, the red-necked longhorn beetle, an invasive insect native to China and Vietnam. It was the first confirmed case ever inside a Japanese national park—and it has put one of the country's most spiritually loaded landscapes on notice.
Yoshinoyama: Why 30,000 Cherry Trees Are Considered Sacred
Mount Yoshino (Yoshinoyama), located in central Nara Prefecture, was registered in 2004 as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." Roughly 30,000 cherry trees of about 200 varieties—mostly Shiroyamazakura (white wild cherry)—blanket the mountain in successive waves at four altitudinal zones called Shimo-Senbon, Naka-Senbon, Kami-Senbon, and Oku-Senbon. The image of "a thousand trees in one glance" (hitome senbon) is an icon of Japanese springtime.
But these trees are not ornamental landscaping. They are objects of worship.
The tradition dates back roughly 1,300 years to En no Gyōja, the legendary founder of Shugendō (Japan's mountain ascetic religion). After a thousand-day spiritual ordeal, he is said to have envisioned the deity Zaō Gongen and carved its image into a wild cherry tree—making cherry the sacred wood of Yoshino. Ever since, devotees have planted cherry trees on the mountain as religious offerings, generation after generation.
The cultural weight is enormous. The warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi held a legendary cherry-blossom party at Yoshinoyama in 1594 with 5,000 followers. The wandering poet-monk Saigyō built a hermitage here. Bashō visited and wrote haiku. To draw a rough comparison: if Washington D.C.'s Tidal Basin cherries are a symbol of international friendship, Yoshino's trees are closer to national consecration. They are, in a real sense, planted prayers.
What Happened in October
On October 10, 2025, the Yoshino town hall received a report of suspicious frass at the base of a wild cherry tree (about 41 cm in diameter) in the Kami-Senbon area. From there, things moved fast:
- Oct 14: Ministry of the Environment officials collected frass samples
- Oct 15: Samples sent to specialists for analysis
- Oct 16: First meeting of the new "Yoshinoyama Aromia bungii Countermeasure Council" (Ministry + Nara Prefecture + Yoshino Town + Yoshinoyama Hoshokai conservation foundation)
- Oct 20: Emergency pesticide injection into the trunk by the Hoshokai
- Oct 23: Lab analysis confirmed the damage was caused by Aromia bungii
According to the Ministry of the Environment, this is the first confirmed Aromia bungii infestation inside any Japanese national park. Yoshinoyama lies within Yoshino-Kumano National Park, is a World Heritage site, is sacred Shugendō ground, and is a top-tier cherry tourism destination. All those layers of protection were breached at once.
Meet Aromia bungii: The "Cherry Assassin"
The red-necked longhorn beetle is a glossy black beetle, 2.5 to 4 cm long, with a striking red pronotum (the "neck") that gives it its common name. It is native to China, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, and northern Vietnam.
It was first detected in Japan in 2012 in Aichi Prefecture, almost certainly hitchhiking in imported timber. In January 2018 it was officially designated an Invasive Alien Species under Japanese law, banning its import, transport, and possession. As of October 2025, it has been confirmed in 16 of Japan's 47 prefectures.
Here is the mechanism of destruction. Females lay tens to hundreds of eggs in cracks in the bark—several times more than native longhorn beetles. The larvae spend two to three years tunneling through the sapwood and heartwood, destroying the vascular tissue that carries water and nutrients. Heavily infested trees can die within roughly three years. The frass they expel is so distinctive—described in Japan as resembling udon noodles or karinto fried dough—that it is the primary signature for detection. Adults emerge from the trunk between May and August to fly off and find new hosts.
Yoshinoyama's cherries are mostly wild Yamazakura, not the Somei-Yoshino cultivar that dominates Japanese cities. But Aromia bungii attacks any tree in the rose family (Rosaceae), so wild cherries, plums, peaches, and apricots are all vulnerable. The beetle particularly favors mature, old-growth trees—precisely the ancient specimens that make Yoshinoyama what it is.
The Cherry Guardians' Counterattack
The Yoshinoyama Hoshokai's trunk injection works by pumping systemic pesticides into the wood to kill larvae from inside. Caught early, it is reasonably effective; once an infestation is advanced, the chewed-out tissue cannot regenerate and pesticides become less effective. Speed of detection is everything.
Other methods deployed elsewhere in Japan include wrapping trunks in protective netting to trap emerging adults, hand-killing adults found mating or laying eggs on bark, and—most painfully—felling and incinerating severely infested trees to prevent them from becoming reservoirs of new beetles. Sometimes you have to cut a cherry tree down to save the rest of them.
Osaka Prefecture has already launched a citizen-driven program titled "Save the Cherry Trees! Aromia bungii Summer Battle 2026," running from June through August 2026. Participants compete to capture the most adult beetles, with prizes for the top 20. Gunma, Tokyo, Hyogo, Chiba and other prefectures publish their own control manuals and crowdsource sightings from residents.
There is one strict rule: because Aromia bungii is a designated invasive species, transporting it alive is a legal violation. If you spot one, you must kill it on the spot—stomp it, smash it—and report the location to local authorities.
A Global Pattern: When Insects Travel With Trade
Japan is hardly alone. The same global trade flows that move container ships and pallets also move insects:

United States — Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis): First detected in Michigan in 2002, this Asian beetle has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees and is now found in 36 U.S. states. Estimated annual local-government costs run around $850 million in tree removal and replacement, plus another $380 million in lost residential property values. Researchers have largely abandoned the goal of eradication and shifted to long-term population suppression via parasitic wasps and resistance breeding.

Europe and North America — Asian Longhorned Beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis): Another Asian beetle, this one targeting maples, poplars, and willows. It has invaded Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, and several U.S. states. In a strange twist, this same species is now establishing itself in Japan as well, having been confirmed in 13 prefectures since 2020–2021.

United States — Dogwood Anthracnose: A fungal disease detected almost simultaneously in Washington State (1976) and New York (1978), now extirpating native dogwoods (Cornus florida) from American forests.
In short: East Asian insects are eating Western trees, Western pathogens are devastating Asian and Japanese flora, and the cargo container is the vector. Yoshinoyama's beetle is one node in a planetary network of invasions.
Why This Story Cuts So Deep
Japan has no legally-designated national flower, but cherry blossoms have functioned as one in practice for centuries. Cherry blossoms appear on the 100-yen coin. Graduation, school entrance, and the start of the fiscal year all coincide with bloom season. Losing the most spiritually charged cherry site in the country would feel less like an environmental loss and more like an attack on identity.
And cherries are under pressure from multiple directions:
- Climate change: Japan's average temperature has risen about 1.3°C over the past century, and according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, peak cherry bloom has shifted earlier by roughly 1.2 days per decade since 1963—accelerating since 2020 in cities like Tokyo
- Witches' broom disease: A pathogen warping branches of Somei-Yoshino, the dominant urban cultivar, causing them to stop flowering
- Aging trees: Many Somei-Yoshino trees planted en masse after World War II are now 70–80 years old and reaching the end of their lifespan
Naoko Abe, a journalist and author specializing in cherry blossoms, has argued that Japan should diversify away from monoculture Somei-Yoshino plantings toward more varied, climate-resilient cultivars. The Yoshinoyama beetle confirmation has added urgency to that argument.
