What if you could step into a fantasy world and walk alongside an immortal elf mage? Not through a screen, but on your own two feet, surrounded by projection-mapped spells, life-sized props, and interactive magic. Universal Studios Japan has done exactly that with its first-ever Frieren: Beyond Journey's End collaboration, which opened on May 30, 2026.

Frieren Comes to Life at Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) has unveiled the details of its long-anticipated collaboration with the hit anime Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. First teased in November 2025, the specifics were finally revealed on March 24, 2026, sending fans into a frenzy.

The collaboration is part of USJ's massive annual event, Universal Cool Japan 2026, which brings Japan's biggest entertainment franchises to life through immersive theme park experiences. This year's lineup already features Detective Conan, Jujutsu Kaisen, the Masquerade series (based on Keigo Higashino's novels), and Monster Hunter Wilds. Frieren completes the roster as the fifth and final franchise.

A Brand-New Attraction Format: Universal Story Walk

The headline attraction is "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Story Walk, Journey of Memories", and it introduces something entirely new to USJ: the Universal Story Walk format.

Unlike traditional ride-based or theater-style attractions, Story Walk is a fully immersive walkthrough experience where guests physically move through elaborately constructed environments. Think massive projection screens displaying spell effects, projection mapping that transforms walls into fantasy landscapes, dynamic lighting and surround sound, and meticulously crafted sets and props, all working together to make you feel like you've truly entered Frieren's world.

This is USJ's first attraction in this format, and they chose Frieren as its debut title, a testament to the series' cultural impact and emotional depth.

The Story

Guests take on the role of travelers arriving in the magical city of Äußerst (Oisaast), where they encounter Frieren, Fern, and Stark. The trio leads them to the Continental Magic Association's library, where Frieren discovers a spell that allows people to relive their past memories.

From there, guests are transported through pivotal moments from the series: the once-in-fifty-years meteor shower that the Hero's party witnessed together, Frieren's first meeting with Fern, fierce battles against demons, and the iconic scene of Himmel's statue surrounded by a field of blue moonrise grass (Sousou-sou).

Highlights for Fans

Several standout features have fans buzzing. Large-scale magical effects including the legendary offensive spell Zoltraak are displayed on giant screens. Incredibly detailed prop recreations include Frieren's staff and a statue of Himmel, the kind of details that could bring tears to any devoted fan's eyes. And perhaps most exciting of all: interactive elements that let guests cast magic themselves.

More Than Just a Walkthrough

USJ announced two additional Frieren experiences alongside the walkthrough, and both opened on May 30 as well.

The ride's full title is "Frieren x Story Ride: Journey of the Bird Demon and the Carriage," running on TRACK3 of the existing Hollywood Dream, The Ride coaster (it is not available on the Backdrop version). The concept: a voice speaking directly into your ear as you tear through the story.

"Frieren: Restaurant of Memories" is a themed restaurant built around the party's favourite foods. On May 29, the day before opening, Atsumi Tanezaki (voice of Frieren) and Nobuhiko Okamoto (voice of Himmel) experienced the attractions at the opening ceremony.

Getting to USJ

Universal Studios Japan is located in Osaka's Konohana Ward. From JR Osaka Station, take the JR Yumesaki Line to Universal City Station, it's about a 15-minute ride with no transfers needed. From Kansai International Airport, the journey takes approximately 70 minutes via JR lines.

Ticket Information

USJ operates a dynamic pricing system, so ticket costs vary by date. A standard 1-Day Studio Pass runs roughly ¥8,600 to ¥11,900 for adults and ¥5,600 to ¥7,400 for children. Tickets can be purchased through USJ's official website, which offers English-language support.

Note that the Story Walk attraction is included with standard park admission, no separate ticket is required for the walkthrough itself. However, Express Passes for shorter wait times may be available and are sold separately.

Best Time to Visit

The attraction runs through mid-January 2027, so the window is wide. Summer (July and August) and the year-end holidays are the busiest. For shorter waits, weekdays in June, September, or November are the better bet.

Where the Anime Stands Now

Season 2 aired from January 16, 2026 on Nippon TV's 30-station national network in the "FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT" slot, Fridays at 11pm. Madhouse returned to animate it. The season adapted volume 7 chapter 61 through volume 9 chapter 80, covering the journey to the northern plateau that follows the first-class mage exam. It ran 10 episodes (38 including season 1) and concluded on March 27 with episode 38, "A Beautiful Sight."

Immediately after that finale, a third season, The Golden Land arc, was announced for October 2027 on Nippon TV. It will adapt "Macht of the Golden Land," beginning at volume 9 chapter 81.

For anyone catching up: Season 1 (28 episodes, September 2023 to March 2024) and Season 2 are available on Crunchyroll, with Season 1 also on Netflix and Hulu in many regions.

The manga is by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, serialised in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday. It has sold over 32 million copies and won the Manga Taisho award in 2021.

Why This Collaboration Matters

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is not a typical shonen action series. Its core sits in memory, loss, the passage of time, and learning to value human connection. It works through quiet rather than spectacle.

Putting that into a theme park, where the currency is sensation, is a genuine creative problem. That USJ built an entirely new attraction format to solve it says something about how highly it rates the property. And walking pace, as it turns out, suits the way time moves in Frieren.
