🎮 Sony ran two streams back to back on Thursday night. Konami ran its own two hours later. By the time the last one ended, more than a dozen games had a release window, and almost none of them were for this year.
Three release dates in one night
At 10 p.m. Japan time on September 3, Sony aired State of Play and then, without a break, State of Play Japan, hosted by voice actor Yuki Kaji and built around studios in Japan and the rest of Asia. Two hours later, at midnight on September 4, Konami ran its own half-hour broadcast, KONAMI PRESS START, simulcast worldwide with subtitles in twelve languages.
Sony's first show ended with Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the closing chapter of Square Enix's remake trilogy, arriving on April 8, 2027. Ten minutes of gameplay went with the date, showing Cid and Vincent in combat and the new quest and exploration systems.
Bandai Namco dated Gundam Rogue Orbit for March 5, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, an original action game rather than an adaptation. Fate/EXTRA Record, the full remake of Fate/EXTRA, landed on January 28, 2027 across Switch 2, Switch, PS5, PS4 and Steam.
Konami spent its slot on two games nobody had seen much of. Rev. NOiR is an original RPG due in 2027. Rhapsody in Scarlet is a new action game set in 1920s New York, where the heroine wields magic and fights alongside a beast.
The calendar that filled up was 2027's
Here are nine of the release dates that landed this week.
| Title | Release |
|---|---|
| Fate/EXTRA Record | January 28, 2027 |
| Until Dawn 2 | January 28, 2027 |
| Metro 2039 | February 5, 2027 |
| Gundam Rogue Orbit | March 5, 2027 |
| Final Fantasy VII Revelation | April 8, 2027 |
| SlashZero | Spring 2027 |
| Rev. NOiR | 2027 |
| Maneater 2 | 2027 |
| Craftopia 1.0 | 2027 |
One week, one year. The pull is not only Japanese either: neither Until Dawn 2 nor Metro 2039 is a Japanese series, and both landed on the same year in the same broadcast.
Craftopia went into early access on September 4, 2020, and on the exact sixth anniversary Pocketpair announced it will reach version 1.0 in 2027. This is the Palworld studio now, and it wrote that without Craftopia there would be no Pocketpair today. Six years in, it picked the same year as everyone else to finish.
So why 2027? Nobody said. Plausible reasons are easy to reach for: development cycles have stretched, Switch 2 is barely a year old and its installed base is still climbing, and Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, 2026, which is not a window most publishers want to stand next to. Any of them could be right; none is on the record.
Late 2026 is not empty. Marvel's Wolverine is out September 15, Silent Hill: Townfall on September 24 and Castlevania: Belmont's Curse on October 15. What emptied out was the announcement pipeline for this year.
September 17, Makuhari
Tokyo Game Show opens in twelve days. The show turns 30, runs five days for the first time, and the public portion has grown from two days to three. July's exhibitor list had 759 companies signed up, filling 3,946 booths from 51 countries and regions, with 300,000 visitors expected.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance will be playable for the first time anywhere, Capcom says, with three quests and a new movement system, the Boost Bracer, in all of them. Sony's booth has it too, alongside Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Marvel's Wolverine and Ace Combat 8.
On September 3, Dragami Games announced that a brand-new Lollipop Chainsaw will be revealed for the first time anywhere at TGS, on four demo stations inside the Sega and Atlus booth. Development is with JP UNIVERSE, the studio Hajime Tabata founded in 2022 after directing Final Fantasy XV. The original came out in 2012; the 2024 release was a remake, RePOP, which pushed the series past 1.5 million copies worldwide.
The detail most likely to matter in ten years is quieter. Pakistan is setting up its first national pavilion, the TechDestination Pakistan Game Pavilion, with twelve development and creative-tech companies, organised by the Pakistan Software Export Board inside a JICA technical-cooperation project. The country now has more than 300 active studios and over 12,000 developers and artists, with games exports growing at 125 percent. A show that spent its first two decades as a Japanese trade event is turning into something else.
The week in numbers
Sensor Tower published its annual read on the Japanese market on September 2. Japanese mobile games took in roughly 1.56 trillion yen, more than 10 billion dollars, in in-app purchases over twelve months, down 5.1 percent year on year and still second in Asia behind China's iOS market. Downloads tell a different story: about 585 million, down 5.4 percent, ninth worldwide. Players spent roughly 16.7 billion hours over the same period. Not many new installs, and the money and the hours are coming from the players already there.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword, out September 4, topped Amazon Japan's preorder ranking for August 23 to 29 and pushed Grand Theft Auto VI into second. One retailer over seven days, but still a good week for Capcom.
In brief
Time Extension confirmed a rumour that had floated since 2013. Ken Christiansen, who drew concept art at Disney Interactive, said Disney's Action Figure Face Off, a Smash Bros.-style crossover fighter, reached prototype with Activision publishing and GameCube as the target platform. The first Kingdom Hearts had shown Disney its characters could share a screen, but the company passed and funded film and television tie-ins instead.
Sony's lawyers argued in a class action over PS Store purchase labelling that a reasonable consumer would not be misled into thinking they own a digital game. Game File reported the August 21 filing, whose main purpose was moving the case into private arbitration. No ruling so far.
Shanghai Alice Reprise posted links to Touhou's streaming and derivative-work guidelines on September 4, before the September 10 release of Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic. Nothing changed. Publishing the original game's ending has always been on the prohibited list, which matters to anyone planning a full playthrough on stream.
ZETA DIVISION won the Pokémon UNITE world championship in San Francisco on August 30, beating Europe's KOMAÏ 3-1 for 100,000 dollars. It is the division's first world title, and it reached the event ranked fifth in Japan.
Next up: a Nintendo Direct
Nintendo has a Direct on September 9 at 11 p.m. Japan time, running about 45 minutes, with a Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct the evening before. If this week's pattern holds, expect plenty of dates and few of them in 2026.
It was a week in which the dates arrived well ahead of the games. What does your 2027 shelf look like from where you are, and which of those dates do you actually believe?
