What if you could see through clouds, rain and darkness from space? That is what SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites do, and Japan's Synspective just put its eighth one into orbit. The company is building toward a 30-satellite constellation able to image any point on Earth within an hour, it holds a role in a ¥283.1 billion Japanese defense program, and it is racing rivals from Finland and the United States. Here is where it actually stands.
Launch Day: The "Eight Days A Week" Mission
On March 21, 2026, at 3:10 AM Japan Standard Time, Synspective's 8th small SAR satellite lifted off from Rocket Lab's Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Māhia Peninsula. Riding aboard an Electron rocket, Rocket Lab's 84th launch overall, the satellite was deployed into a 573 km low Earth orbit.
The mission, named "Eight Days A Week," marked the 8th consecutive successful launch for the Synspective-Rocket Lab partnership, maintaining a perfect 100% success rate since their first collaboration in December 2020. Following deployment, Synspective confirmed successful antenna deployment and normal test communications. The satellite will now undergo several months of functional verification, including observation and data acquisition tests.
This satellite was developed with support from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) through its "SME Innovation Promotion Program" (Phase 3), specifically the "Satellite Remote Sensing Business Enhancement Demonstration" theme.
What Is SAR and Why Does It Matter?
Most people picture satellite imagery as photographs taken from space: clear, colorful pictures of the Earth's surface. Optical images have a fundamental limitation, though. They need sunlight and clear skies.
SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites take a completely different approach. Instead of capturing reflected light, they emit microwave signals toward the Earth's surface and analyze the signals that bounce back. This produces detailed imagery regardless of weather or time of day, whether it is midnight, pouring rain, or heavy overcast.
This capability makes SAR invaluable for time-critical applications like disaster response (assessing earthquake or flood damage immediately, even through storm clouds), defense and security monitoring, infrastructure surveillance, and environmental tracking.
Traditionally, SAR satellites were massive, expensive machines operated by governments. A new generation of companies, Synspective among them, has miniaturized the technology into satellites weighing around 100 kg (220 lbs), making it possible to launch dozens of them affordably.
Synspective's Grand Plan: 30 Satellites by the Late 2020s
Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Tokyo's Koto Ward, Synspective develops its proprietary StriX series of small SAR satellites. Each weighs about 100 kg, roughly a tenth of a conventional SAR satellite. In their sharpest Staring Spotlight mode they resolve 0.46 m in ground range by 0.25 m in azimuth. A key technical advantage, according to the company, is that StriX satellites cover a wider area than competitors at comparable resolution.
The company's goal is to deploy 30 SAR satellites across inclined and sun-synchronous orbits, creating a constellation that can revisit any point on Earth within one hour.
Eight, though, is the launch count rather than the operating fleet. Of the eight satellites placed in orbit, five are currently in service, including this one. The near-term target is ten by the end of 2026, with the full 30-satellite constellation expected from 2028 onward. Synspective added a 10-launch contract with Rocket Lab in September 2025, bringing planned Electron launches for StriX to 27 in total, and has a further 10-satellite multi-ride contract with Germany's Exolaunch to spread its launch risk.
Synspective went public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth Market in December 2024, further strengthening its financial foundation for this ambitious expansion.
Defense Contracts: A ¥283.1 Billion National Security Role
Perhaps the most significant development in Synspective's recent history is its deepening involvement in Japan's national defense.
In December 2025, a group led by Mitsubishi Electric with SKY Perfect JSAT and Mitsui & Co. won the Ministry of Defense's "Satellite Constellation Development and Operations Project." The three set up a special purpose company, Trisat Constellation, which signed with the ministry in February 2026. The contract totals ¥283.1 billion including tax (roughly $1.75 billion) and runs to the end of March 2031, about five years.
Synspective joined as a cooperating company alongside iQPS, Axelspace and Mitsui Bussan Aerospace, responsible for acquiring SAR imagery. The three-party subcontract between Trisat, Mitsubishi Electric and Synspective is worth ¥105.6 billion including tax (roughly $650 million).
The project gives Japan's Self-Defense Forces priority access to imagery for "stand-off defense," the ability to detect and track potential threats from a safe distance, through a privately operated constellation under a PFI (Private Finance Initiative) structure.
Synspective says it is also drawing on Japan's Space Strategy Fund for this work. By the company's own disclosure, defense-related revenue accounted for 65% of its business as of 2024 and is projected to reach 80% by 2026.
The Global SAR Race: How Does Synspective Stack Up?
Synspective is competing in a rapidly growing global market where several well-funded players are vying for dominance.
ICEYE (Finland) is the current market leader by constellation size. Founded in 2014, it operates the world's largest SAR constellation, having launched 62 satellites for itself and customers since 2018 as of November 2025. The fourth-generation satellites it introduced in March 2025 image at 25 cm resolution. ICEYE reported more than €250 million in 2025 revenue and a contracted backlog above €1.5 billion, dominated by national security work, and raised over €1 billion in June 2026. In December 2025 its joint venture with Germany's Rheinmetall won a roughly €1.7 billion ($1.9 billion) contract from the German armed forces for a sovereign SAR reconnaissance constellation. ICEYE also has procurement agreements with several European governments and with Japan's IHI Corporation.
Capella Space (United States) was founded in 2016 and planned a 36-satellite constellation focused on high-resolution SAR imagery. However, in 2025, quantum computing company IonQ acquired Capella Space, integrating its SAR assets into a broader vision for quantum-secure satellite communications. Capella continues to operate and has launched 14 satellites, but its strategic direction has shifted significantly under new ownership.
Synspective's differentiators in this competitive landscape include its strong government backing (Japan's defense ministry and space strategy fund), its integrated business model combining raw data sales with AI-powered analytics solutions, and its position in the Asian market, where neither ICEYE nor Capella dominates. While Synspective trails badly on satellite count, its focused approach to high-value government and commercial customers, combined with rapid constellation expansion plans, positions it as a serious long-term contender.
Challenges Ahead
Synspective's path to 30 satellites is not without obstacles. Manufacturing 22 more satellites requires scaling production at the company's Yamato Technology Center while managing the financial pressures that come with heavy upfront investment. The company continues to operate at a loss as it prioritizes constellation build-out, and has been raising additional capital through stock warrant issuances.
The competitive pressure is also intensifying beyond the established players. China's Spacety and emerging players from India are entering the market, while ICEYE's strategy of selling sovereign satellite systems directly to national governments is creating a new dynamic where countries build their own dedicated SAR capabilities rather than purchasing data from commercial providers.
A Quiet Space Revolution
What the eighth launch shows is less about the satellite count than about the shape of the business: a Japanese space startup now standing on both defense and commercial legs, moving from university spin-off to a listed company inside a national security program. Whether that is enough to compete with rivals several times its size in orbit is a question the 30-satellite mark will answer.
