🌀 Drop someone into an empty room, tell them to wander around, and their feet have probably already picked a side, and it's not the one they'd guess. A new study from Spain and Japan found that when people move around freely, about 65% drift counterclockwise. Nobody tells them to. Most never notice. And the scientists who found it weren't even looking.

A discovery nobody was chasing

The whole thing started with the two-meter rule.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a team at the University of Navarra in Spain was running a very practical experiment: how many people can you pack into a room before they can no longer keep a safe distance from one another? They put volunteers in an enclosed space, told them to walk around, and measured the point where personal bubbles started popping.

Then someone watched the overhead footage and noticed something off. The crowd wasn't just milling about at random. Averaged out, it was slowly rotating, like coffee stirred by an invisible spoon. And it always stirred the same way: counterclockwise.

In 32 of 33 experimental runs, the crowd drifted in that same direction. That's not a number you can shrug off as luck.

"Wait, is this just a Spanish thing?"

The obvious objection: maybe Spaniards just walk weird.

In much of Europe, people dodge to the right when passing each other. In Japan, they dodge to the left. If turning direction were just a leftover of local traffic manners, Japan should produce the mirror image: a clockwise crowd.

So the Spanish team joined forces with researchers at the University of Tokyo, including Claudio Feliciani (then at UTokyo, now at Waseda University) and Professor Katsuhiro Nishinari, who has spent years studying the physics of crowds and traffic jams. They ran the experiments again in Japan.

Japan turned counterclockwise too.

Across a series of experiments in two countries, in circles, in squares, in wide-open spaces, with walls and without, the same leftward pull kept showing up. The team checked the usual suspects: handedness, dominant eye, gender. None of them explained it.

The part that's genuinely funny

Two findings tip this from "huh, interesting" into "you've got to be kidding me."

First, they asked people which way they thought crowds turn. Most said clockwise. They were confidently, collectively wrong about their own behavior. Whatever is steering us is running in the background, somewhere we can't see.

Second, five-year-olds do it too. Data from earlier experiments with young children in Japan showed the same counterclockwise preference, actually a touch stronger. Kids haven't had time to soak up decades of pedestrian etiquette. When a preschooler and a Tokyo office worker both lean the same way, it starts to look less like a habit and more like a factory setting.

So why do we do it?

Here's the honest answer the researchers give: they don't know yet.

But the way they don't know is interesting. The crowd-level swirl, it turns out, isn't really a crowd phenomenon at all. It's driven by a minority of people with a strong personal preference for turning left, and those few are enough to tug the whole group's average off balance. The collective pattern is just individual quirks, scaled up.

The team's framing is this: in collective motion elsewhere in nature, clockwise and counterclockwise show up in roughly equal measure, with no pull toward either. A strong, consistent bias in humans hints at some asymmetry baked into how our bodies move, or how our brains process the world as we move through it. The announcement makes a second point too. Many crowd phenomena, lane formation in a corridor among them, have been explained by interactions between people, yet an individual-level bias alone can produce the same result.

Put another way, your drift to the left in an empty plaza might be a small window into how brains and bodies are wired, or just a strange thing feet do. The team is still chasing the answer.

Not just party trivia

There's a practical payoff under the curiosity. People who model crowd flow for stations, stadiums, festivals, and evacuation routes could bake in this leftward lean, and the study suggests routes designed to run counterclockwise may simply feel smoother to walk. For a country like Japan, where Shibuya Crossing and rush-hour Shinjuku are applied crowd physics every single day, that's not a small detail.

Go on, test yourself

The genuinely fun part is that you can't really run this experiment on purpose. The moment you think "okay, walk randomly," you're no longer walking randomly, and you'll probably overcorrect and march clockwise just to prove the scientists wrong.

But next time you're drifting through a museum, circling a big open lobby, or pacing on a phone call, glance down at where your feet have taken you. There's a decent chance they've been steering you to the left.
