☕ Can you buy a neutrino as a souvenir? In Japan's "science city" of Tsukuba, a small coffee roaster has teamed up with one of the country's top physics labs to sell drip-bag coffee named after subatomic particles — and each blend is tuned to match the particle it's named for. Visiting researchers have started taking them home as gifts.

A coffee roaster five minutes from a particle accelerator

Tsukuba, about an hour northeast of Tokyo, is Japan's purpose-built research hub — a city packed with national labs, universities, and the people who staff them. One of its anchors is KEK, the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, a particle-physics laboratory whose accelerators slam particles together to probe the basic building blocks of the universe. Work done here helped earn a share of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Just five minutes away by car sits Mokkun Coffee, a tiny self-roasting shop in the Ōsone neighborhood that deals only in top-grade specialty beans. Lab staff drop by often enough that the shop and the scientists are on friendly terms — which is exactly how this oddball collaboration got going.

Five particles, five deliberately different cups

The lineup is five drip-bag coffees, each named after a subatomic particle tied to research at KEK: Electron, Muon, Bottom Quark, Neutrino, and Higgs Boson. The clever part isn't just the names. Owner Kawamura, 45, blended each one so the flavor nods to the particle's real physical character.

The Electron — the particle everyone meets in school, the one humming through every wire in your house — is the crowd-pleaser, an approachable blend meant for just about anyone.

The Muon, a heavier cousin of the electron famous for punching cleanly through solid matter (physicists use them to peer inside volcanoes and pyramids), is built around a clear, see-through taste.

The Bottom Quark is one of the heavyweights of the particle world, so its cup is heavy-bodied to match.

The Neutrino — a near-weightless ghost of a particle, trillions of which are streaming through you as you read this without leaving a trace — gets a light, delicate profile.

And the Higgs Boson, the particle that gives others their mass and was confirmed in 2012 by a sprawling international team, is imagined as a trip around the globe: a rich blend of beans from Kenya, Indonesia, and Brazil.

How a physics major ended up roasting "quarks"

The idea came from KEK, which pitched it to the shop in June 2023. It landed well. Kawamura had majored in physics at university and said the proposal struck a chord. The two sides split the work — Mokkun Coffee handled the bean blends and the label design, while KEK wrote the product descriptions printed in both Japanese and English. The series was finished that September.

Each pack is the no-fuss drip-bag type: set it over a cup, pour hot water, done. A five-pack set runs 900 yen (about $5.65) and singles go for 180 yen (around $1.13). And every purchase quietly funds a little science: 20 yen (roughly 12 cents) per item goes to KEK.

Sold out at a neutrino conference

The souvenir angle has real legs. According to the reporting, the coffee sells at both KEK's shop and Mokkun Coffee, and a KEK public-relations staffer, Yumi Aoki (32), recalled that the Neutrino blend sold out during a neutrino research meeting in November 2025. Her pitch: the coffee has both a carefully tuned flavor and a story behind it, which makes it ideal as a gift. Kawamura says some overseas researchers make the trip to the shop in person.

There's a fresh stamp of approval, too. In April 2026, KEK announced that the particle-coffee drip-bag series had been chosen for Tsukuba's official certified-products list — the first time a coffee product has ever made the cut.

It's a small but genuinely charming example of a city wearing its identity on its sleeve. Tsukuba is a science town through and through, so of course its souvenir coffee comes with a physics lesson you can drink.
