🤖 Science fiction is becoming reality at a Japanese airport. In May 2026, two humanoid robots will start "working" at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. Their job isn't to deliver coffee or guide passengers with a smile. They'll push heavy cargo containers into airplane bellies and mop down cabin floors — the kind of physically grueling labor humans increasingly don't want to do.
This is Japan's first experiment of its kind, and the country's aviation industry's answer to a deepening labor shortage. There's also something culturally unique going on here: the idea of having "robot colleagues" doesn't seem to ruffle Japanese feathers the way it might elsewhere. There may be a reason for that.
What's Actually Happening at Haneda
On April 27, 2026, JAL Ground Service (JGS) — the ground handling subsidiary of Japan Airlines — and GMO AI & Robotics announced that humanoid robots will begin a trial at Haneda Airport in May. It's the first such initiative at any airport in Japan.
The robots won't be roaming through the passenger terminals. They'll be working in the airport's restricted zones — the "ramp" area near the runways and inside JAL's massive maintenance hangar. Initial tasks include:
- Transferring cargo containers from a tug-trolley (called a "dolly") onto a high-lift loader, the specialized vehicle that lifts cargo into an aircraft's belly hold
- Rotating cargo containers on the dolly
- Releasing and securing the latches that hold containers in place
- Eventually: cabin cleaning and passenger luggage handling
The trial runs from May 2026 through 2028, roughly three years. JGS aims to "replace human labor in some task domains by the end of fiscal 2028," with full deployment targeted for 2029 or later.
JGS President Yoshiteru Suzuki has stated that the goal is to "replace some areas of work" by the end of fiscal year 2028, depending on real-world conditions.
The Stars Are "Made in China" — Performance and Anxiety in One Package
Here's the twist: both robots being deployed are Chinese-made.
Unitree G1, made by Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics, is the smaller of the two. At 130cm tall and 35kg, it's roughly child-sized, with 29 joints and a continuous operating time of two hours. According to Unitree, the G1 is trained in NVIDIA's Isaac Simulator using motion capture and reinforcement learning, then transferred to the physical robot using a "Sim2Real" approach.
UBTECH Walker E, from Shenzhen-based UBTech, is the adult-sized counterpart — 172cm, 73kg, with 41 joints and three hours of continuous operation.
Why is Japan's flagship airline using Chinese robots instead of homegrown ones? The honest answer is performance and price. Tesla's Optimus, Unitree's G1, and UBTech's Walker E have all reached the market at relatively low prices and reasonable performance. Meanwhile, Japan's once-pioneering humanoid industry — Honda's ASIMO, SoftBank's Pepper — has lost momentum in recent years.
The choice isn't without controversy. Aviation Wire reported security concerns that "after deployment, manufacturers might be forced to comply with directives from the Chinese government." Deploying foreign-made robots into critical infrastructure like airports is the kind of decision that's likely to spark policy debates.
Why Japan, Why Now — A Structural Labor Crisis
JAL Ground Service employs roughly 4,000 ground handling workers. Replacing portions of their work with robots is a response to a structural crisis affecting all of Japan.
Japan's working-age population (ages 15–64) peaked at 87.16 million in 1995 and has declined to roughly 74 million in 2024. By 2040, some forecasts project a shortfall of 11 million workers.
Ground handling is particularly grueling work:
- Outdoor labor in extreme conditions (blazing heat in summer, biting cold in winter)
- Irregular shifts (early mornings and late nights)
- Heavy lifting (cargo containers can weigh several hundred kilograms)
- Precision work in tight spaces
Adding pressure: 2024 saw approximately 42.7 million inbound visitors — a record high. Tourism is booming, but staffing the airports that support it has become extraordinarily difficult. Tomohiro Uchida, president of GMO AI & Robotics, has noted that "while airports appear highly automated on the surface, back-end operations still depend heavily on human labor."
Japan isn't unique in facing ground crew shortages — airports across the U.S. and Europe report similar problems. But Japan's combination of strict immigration policy and rapid demographic decline means the pressure is hitting earlier and harder.
Why Japanese People Are "Kind to Robots" — From Atom to Doraemon
Foreign reporters often note something curious about Japan: the cultural anxiety about "robots taking our jobs" is significantly weaker here than in Western countries.
There's a cultural reason. Japanese pop culture has a long lineage of friendly robots — Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy (1952), Fujiko F. Fujio's Doraemon (1969), Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell. Generations of Japanese children grew up with stories where robots are companions and partners, not threats.
By contrast, Hollywood films like Terminator, The Matrix, and Ex Machina have built a cultural canon where robots and AI rebel against humanity. Some cultural anthropologists suggest that Japan's Shinto-influenced animism — the idea that spirits inhabit all things, including objects — creates fertile ground for embracing machines as fellow beings.
Real-world examples back this up. At Expo 2025 in Osaka, the "Future of Life" pavilion (supervised by Osaka University Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro) featured androids that visitors interacted with surprisingly naturally. Self-checkout kiosks and hotel front-desk robots are now common sights across Japan.
JAL's project sits squarely on top of this "robot-friendly" cultural foundation.
Will Travelers Actually See Them at Haneda? Sadly, No
If you're already planning to visit Haneda after May 2026 hoping to spot a robot — sorry. The honest answer is "almost certainly not."
The robots will work in restricted zones — JAL's hangar and the ramp area. Passengers can't enter, and you won't be able to take photos. Air Traveler Club put it bluntly: even if a robot loads your luggage, you won't know it.
JAL isn't keeping the project entirely secret, though. At the April 27 media demonstration, the Unitree G1 was filmed pushing cargo onto a conveyor belt and even waving to nearby staff. Future updates are expected on JAL's official website and social media.
Travelers who really want to see Japanese robots in person have other options:
- Haneda Terminal 3: JAL has run earlier trials with "JET," a teleoperated avatar robot, with occasional public demonstrations
- Osaka/Kansai: Visit the legacy of Expo 2025 and Professor Ishiguro's android research
- Odaiba, Tokyo: The full-scale Unicorn Gundam statue (not technically a working robot, but iconic)
Can We Really Trust Robots With This?
This isn't all utopian. The trial faces serious practical hurdles.
Operating time is the first. Unitree G1 runs for two hours, Walker E for three, before needing a recharge. Veteran ground crew handle 8-hour shifts. Full replacement is currently impossible.
Cost is the second. A Japan Today commenter pointed out that GMO is renting these robots out for ¥100,000 to ¥250,000 per day (roughly $640 to $1,600 USD at current rates) — at the high end, that's approximately what a ground handler earns in a month. Right now, hiring humans is dramatically cheaper.
Safety is the third. Airport ramps are chaotic environments — specialized vehicles, humans, and aircraft sharing tight spaces. Can robots operate reliably in rain, snow, high winds, and noise? If a robot damages a multi-million-dollar aircraft, who's liable? The three-year trial exists partly to answer these questions.
JGS President Suzuki has emphasized that "ultimate safety management and complex decisions remain with humans." For the foreseeable future, the robots are colleagues, not replacements.
The Airport of the 2030s
The JAL-GMO trial is just step one. The roadmap calls for connecting individual movements into full task flows starting in late 2027, with partial workforce replacement by the end of fiscal 2028.
Industry analysts believe that if the Haneda trial demonstrates 70% or higher task reliability by mid-2027, scaled pilots will follow at Narita and Kansai airports. ANA (All Nippon Airways) hasn't announced robot trials yet, but JAL's success would likely pressure competitors to follow suit.
Sometime in the 2030s, a passenger arriving at a Tokyo airport might glance out the window and see a silver humanoid nimbly loading cargo into the belly of a Boeing 787. By then, it won't feel like science fiction anymore. It'll just be the airport.
