On September 3, 2024, Japan's Ministry of the Environment declared the small Indian mongoose eradicated from Amami Oshima: 45 years after release, 24 years after control began, more than 30,000 animals caught and 3.6 billion yen spent. Two probability models, at 99.7 and 98.9 percent, settled the call.
